Constantine 2 Is Happening, R-Rating, Release, Cast, and More

If we go by critics, then we are yet to receive a good Constantine live action adaptation, however, Francis Lawrence’s Constantine (2005) has a massive cult following. Part of the reason for this is because Keanu Reeves played the role of John Constantine and as we all know, Keanu has a massive following. Therefore, fans have been waiting on a sequel since a long time and it has been nearly 2 decades now. However, in September 2022, Deadline Hollywood reported that Warner Bros. will develop a Constantine 2. As it happens, we have some major updates regarding the film as it is now actively under development.

Constantine 2 Release Date and Rating Updates

The last we saw Constantine was in Netflix’ Sandman where John was replaced by Joanna due to issues with copyrights. However, they were essentially the same character and it was only after her appearance, that the buzz for Constantine began again. So, in September 2022, the film was announced with Keanu Reeves set to return in the lead role. Francis Lawrence returned as the film’s director, with Akiva Goldsman writing the screenplay. As for the producers, Goldsman, J. J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella are co-producing the film. Thankfully, Keanue Reeves also confirmed that he had spoken to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn and was told that the sequel would still be made.

Thanks to concept of DC Elseworlds, Constantine will distinguish itself from the upcoming DC Universe just like Matt Reeves’ The Batman series and Todd Phillips’ The Joker series. The latest update is that Lawrence just stated work had proceeded following the conclusion of the 2023 WGA strikes and that he, Reeves and Goldsman have been meeting and discussing the story. He also stated that they intend to fully explore the R-Rated potential of the film, which the first film unfortunately couldn’t.

“So Constantine 2 obviously got held up by the writers strike. And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control. Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen–the script has to be written–but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it.”

As for the release date, considering that currently, not even the script is ready, we cannot expect it anytime before 2025.

Constantine Sequel Plot and Cast

Goldsman confirmed the sequel expands on the themes of the previous film, and will work on “maintaining the barrier between earth and the evil creatures that are on the other side. Keanu Reeves expressed his desire for the movie to be more like the first one, “I think Keanu, we have talked, he said, ‘I want to keep it like the first one. Simple, contain and based on characters, not on special effects, and if we can’t get that, then I’m not in it.” As for the cast of the film, so far only Keanu has been confirmed however, we expect the following to return as well:

  • Peter Stormare as the devil himself, Lucifer
  • Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson
  • Tilda Swinton as Gabriel
  • Shia LaBeouf as Chas Kramer
  • Djimon Hounsou as Papa Midnite
