DUNE: PART TWO IMAX 70mm

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 is set to be the next blockbuster film to aim for a major run on IMAX 70mm. The much-awaited 2024 film release continues the storyline of Paul Atreides as he seeks revenge for the murder of his father. The official synopsis from Warner Bros. and Legendary reads: “This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Dune: Part 2 in 70mm IMAX

If there’s one thing Oppenheimer’s release highlighted, then perhaps it was the merits of 70mm IMAX. Aced by Christopher Nolan as the gold standard of filming, the pristine work of Nolan created a demand almost impossible to provide to everyone who wanted to see it. It is ideal for a movie like Dune, which has been filmed for IMAX by Villeneuve, who is a major proponent of film over digital, like Nolan, Kenneth Branagh, and Quentin Tarantino. As Christopher Nolan stated:

“[The] sharpness and the clarity and the depth of the image is unparalleled. The headline, for me, is by shooting on IMAX 70mm film, you’re really letting the screen disappear. You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses. You’ve got a huge screen and you’re filling the peripheral vision of the audience. You’re immersing them in the world of the film.”

Dune: Part 2 was originally slated for November 2023. However, was moved to March 15, 2024, to assure that the actors would be able to take part in the press leading up to its release. Though it’s not as soon as we’d hoped to watch the film, yesterday it was announced, following the end of the actors’ strike, Dune 2 would be shifting release dates to March 1, 2024.
