A Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel is now in production, in addition to the yet-untitled television series for Apple TV+, which will continue the MonsterVerse. Godzilla’s initial release by Legendary Pictures in 2014 marked the start of The MonsterVerse. After the first movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla Vs. Kong were released in theatres to complete the gigantic monster universe. The father-and-son duo of Kurt and Wyatt Russell have already been cast as the series leads, though a premiere date for the new, as-yet-untitled MonsterVerse series has not yet been announced. To assist in producing these fresh episodes, the TV programme for Apple TV+ will also have Matt Shakman, the director of Disney’s WandaVision, on board.
According to the spoilers in the Australian Government press release, which Twitter outlet Kaiju New Outlet found, Kong will return as a protector of the planet Earth instead of an antagonist trying to crush cities and people under his hairy feet: “The fifth film in the MonsterVerse franchise will see Kong defend the Earth from the unusual and dangerous creatures that threaten his new home.”
In a prior interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Adam Wingard stated the following regarding his future plans for the MonsterVerse: “I think Godzilla vs. Kong is the first time that we’ve really truly been able to have full sequences where the film leaves the humans and stays with the monsters, just like any other character. That’s a big breakthrough VFX-wise and even story-wise. If there’s another MonsterVerse movie, in my opinion, it should be the first full-on monster film. I would say, 30 percent humans, the rest monsters, basically flipping the formula of what a lot of these movies generally are. I think people are ready for it.”
Godzilla vs. Kong 2 will hit theatres on March 15, 2024.
