Monster is a 2023 Japanese film directed by Hirokazu Koreeda who has given us 14+ films including Shoplifters, Broker, Nobody Knows, Like Father Like Son, Our Little Sister Still Walking and many more. The film stars Soya Kurokawa, Sakuro Ando, Eita Nagayama and Yuko Tanaka. The official synopsis reads, “a single mother demands answers from a school teacher when her son begins acting strangely. A fight at school causes even more trouble.” Many are calling it a masterpiece in mystery. The Koreeda directorial remains to be one of the highest rated films of the year. As there isn’t a major studio behind the film, it didn’t have the luxury of a wide release except for a few regions. But, if you live in India like me, then you didn’t get to enjoy the film in theatres. So, if you want to watch it now, here’s when it is releasing online.
When Can You Watch Monster Online?
Monster first premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 17th, 2023. Later, the film was released in Japan on June 2nd, 2023. An USA release also took place in November last year. However, as mentioned above the film didn’t release anywhere else but Monster is now coming to digital and VOD platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple iTunes and Vudu on February 27th, 2024. The online release date has been pushed back from February 6th, 2024. The new release date has been announced courtesy of When To Stream.
So, if you were waiting for the film’s online release, then this update is disappointing as now you have to wait 20 days more. Monster received wide praise from fans and critics, earning a 97% critic approval rating and a 91% audience score from Rotten Tomatoes. The film received a six minute long standing ovation at Cannes and received two major awards including Best Screenplay and Queer Palm. I’m so psyched to watch the film in February, even if I’m a year behind the rest of the world.
