RRR is historical fiction film that released in 2022 and absolutely exploded amongst the audiences because of the sheer scale of it. The director of the film was S.S. Rajamouli and I don’t think he needs further introduction as he is one of the most revered directors in the Indian Film Industry who has given us films like Magadheera, Makkhi, Bahubali: The Beginning and Bahubali: The Conclusion. While his earlier films were a big hit in the South Indian belt, his later films like Bahubali were a Pan-India explosion. The first Bahubali was merely the start but the sequel was even bigger as the film broke numerous records. The hype around the film was something that was unseen and unheard for an Indian film. So, everyone was excited about Rajamouli’s next venture and he didn’t disappoint.
Once again the director gave us a spectacle to marvel at. He revived the dying theatres after Covid-19 as his film demanded the audiences to step out of their houses watch the film on the big screen. The premise of RRR is, “Set in the 1920s, the plot explores the undocumented period in their lives when both the revolutionaries chose to go into obscurity before they began the fight for their country. N. T. Rama Rao Jr.”
RRR 2 is in Development?
RRR was a huge hit all over India and after it exhausted its massive theatrical run in India, it went to onto marvel other audiences all over the world as the film released in the US and China and did considerably well. While the film is an Indian Masala film, you can’t deny the praise it has garnered in the west as they feel like this is the old school action movie they’ve been missing for all these year and why does Hollywood doesn’t produce anything this anymore. Considering the box office numbers and the praise for the film overall many suspected a sequel was in the works.
At first, this appeared to be just another rumor spread by fans but now a recent statement from S.S. Rajamouli confirms that there indeed is a sequel under development. During a recent Q&A for the film Rajamouli talked about the widespread love for RRR and confirmed that he is indeed planning an RRR 2 and as of now the story is being worked on. The Bahubali director said, “My father is the story writer for all my films,” Rajamouli said during the screening. “We’ve discussed a big about [the RRR sequel] and he’s working on the story.”
Variety confirmed that the sequel is in very early stages development and there is nothing much to know about it. However, this news suggests that Rajamouli has fulfilled a wish of one of his stars in the film. NTR Jr. back in April had mentioned his desire to convert RRR into a franchise and it looks like he will get that. The actor said, “I’ve used the word franchise thinking, hoping that there would be another world of RRR again,” NTR Jr. said. “Sometimes [if] you just hope and you say a few words hoping it would happen, it will happen. It’s just a way of positive thinking, wanting more.”
RRR is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
