Sony Pictures is most famously known for being the studio behind the revered Spider-Man trilogy from Sam Raimi. It is also the studio responsible for ruining Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man reboot films. Now after rightfully handing over Spider-Man to Marvel, Sony is building its own universe with Spider-Man villains in the forefront. Well, let us move away from Marvel movies for a second. Sony Pictures has quite the reputation when it comes to other movies as well. The great debacle of Blade Runner 2049 is one example. Excellent film, poor box office performance. However, this is just example. There are numerous examples of films under Sony’s belt that were blockbusters and it looks like the studio doesn’t just want to limit themselves to Marvel stuff as they’re releasing 23 films in theatres of mixed IP.
Sony Pictures Is Expanding Their Arsenal!
When it was announced that the first day of CinemaCon would be about Sony’s upcoming projects many people were disinterested as they assumed most of the announcements would be limited to Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. To everyone’s surprise, Sony had a lot in store for us. Sony was not messing around when they said that they want to promote theatrical distribution. The studio is partnering up with multiple cinema making individuals and networks to distribute 23 of their films in theatres by the end of this year.
Not all of these films would be produced by Sony but they would be distributed by them. Basically, Sony will release mix IP big originals. They strongly believe theatrical release is the way forward as Spider-Man: No Way Home was a huge success for them. So, they partnership they had with Marvel a similar partnership will be formed between Sony and other big companies like Apple to make their content available in theatres.
