Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Reviews Round-Up

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles need no introduction. They’re a big part of 90s kids’ child hood. In case, you don’t know them, they’re a group of superheroes, sorry, turtle superheroes. They were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The first film of the franchise released in 1990 and ever since they’ve have had six big screen appearances. The last film of the IP released in 2014 and despite being grilled by critics, the film earned half a billion. There was another film that came out last year but it directly went to Netflix. The franchise is loved by children and despite the quality of the films, they’re always a financial success. Paramount wouldn’t leave a franchise sitting. So they’re back with another reboot – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Although, I think this time they’ve gotten it right as the film has glowing reviews from critics and a strong 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Reviews Round-Up – Fantastic On All Fronts?

Jordan Hoffman (The Messenger) – “A jubilee of barf and snot and ooze and stinkbugs and slobbering rhinoceroses and shouting “awesome” when someone lands a cool kick” Original Score: 7.5/10

Kevin Maher {Times (UK)} – “Besides a couple of live-action inserts, mostly from kung-fu movies, the film is fully animated but with the kind of careless scribbles and inky lines that suggest imagery pulled from the margins of a school notebook during a dull chemistry class.” Original Score: 3/5

Matt Singer (ScreenCrush) – “It turns this very familiar concept into something fresh.” Original Score: 7/10

Clarisse Loughrey {Independent (UK) } – “Mutant Mayhem blends a hyper-aware but affectionate love of the franchise’s past with the look and lingo of the present.” Original Score: 4/5

John Nugent (Empire Magazine) – “It’s that adolescent experience that keeps this latest entry feeling more alive and engaging than it has any right to.” Original Score: 4/5

Kristy Puchko (Mashable) – “An action-packed, utterly goofy nostalgia trip.”

Frank Scheck (Hollywood Reporter) – “Cowabunga!”

Peter Bradshaw (Guardian) – “This new animated origin story for the chelonian adventurers is unexpectedly funny, with a rather stylish crepuscular design.” Original Score: 3/5

Kate Erbland (indieWire) – “The heart of “Mutant Mayhem” is pure, and the look of it is sprightly and unique, making it a worthy new addition to a franchise that clearly still has new stories to tell.” Original Score: B

Liz Shannon Miller (Consequence) – “In a time when so much of what we consume can feel plastic and cheap and mass-produced, it’s the human touch we come to crave — especially when it leads to something as fun as this.” Original Score: A-

Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) – “Considering Rogen’s participation as both a writer and actor, it’s surprising that “Mutant Mayhem” plays it so safe, not merely in terms of plot but with regards to its comedy.”
