Patrick Hughes, the director behind the American version of The Raid confirms that his film is not a complete remake of the 2011 film of the same name, but merely an inspiration and a new take on the same material. Originally, The Raid is an indonesian action-thriller film written and directed by film-maker Gareth Evans, starring Iko Uwais as Rama, one of the rookie members of the special forces unit tasked to take down an underworld kingpin. The film’s critical and commercial success has led to the sequel The Raid 2, released in 2014 to positive reviews. Both film’s were well-known to showcase the caliber of Indonesian Martial arts.
The Raid American Version Details
Director Patrick Hughes, who previously directed The Hitman’s Bodyguard confirmed the news in a recent interview on how his take on the new Raid film is going to be different from the original.
“It’s not a remake as such, it’s a reimagining and it’s taking what was so incredibly crazy with that hook. It’s a very nitty-gritty, real world in that. Stepping into the straight action-thriller, but it’s on that saga level and that’s a project that I’m really, really excited about, I’m excited because I have come off a big run of doing action comedies and I love that genre and I’m certainly going to be working it again in the future, but for now, I’ve got two projects and the other’s a big action, sci-fi, horror, thriller, survival, epic movie. There are just a couple of different genres I want to step into for a while and then I’ll certainly be coming back to the action comedy because it is so much fun to work in, too.”
The basic plot of the new The Raid film is expected to be very much similar to the original, though it’s going to be well adjusted to the sensibilities of Western audience. The new version is set to take place in Badlands area of Philadelphia and the story follows an elite group of undercover DEA task force climbing a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.
