The direct sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun released this year. It took Paramount almost 36 years to make Top Gun: Maverick. While the sequel for it was in the works for a long time, it never seem to have cohesively work out. Initially, Paramount had plans to bring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer back with director Tony Scott for the sequel in 2010. However, the tragic suicide of the director in 2012 pressed a long break on the project. It wasn’t until 2017 when Joseph Kosinski came on board to helm the sequel. The principal photography for Top Gun: Maverick finally kicked off in mid 2018 and would continue till early 2019 with plans to release it in July 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic had different plans. With multiple delays and reshoots, Maverick finally returned on May 27th 2022 and boy was it worth it.
The film enjoyed a massive box office surge despite the skepticism of audiences regarding theatres. It was lauded by the critics for its great action sequences and most importantly the emotional weight carried by the film. A lot of people found it better than the original including me. Paramount is enjoying the box office success of Maverick of about $1.3 Billion worldwide, even if they’ve announced the film’s digital debut dates, it looks like the film still has some more money to make at the Box Office and it is not tired of shattering previous records. Recently, the film broke another record set by a Marvel film.
Top Gun: Maverick becomes the 6th Biggest Film on Domestic Box Office!
Top Gun which no one had thought 30 years ago that it would rise to become one of the biggest action franchises. The sequel has become so big that it is now locking horns with one of the biggest studios of our generation- Marvel. With films like The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame Marvel had announced its Box Office domination. While the current phase of Marvel might be struggling but no one can deny their past success.
However Top Gun: Maverick has decided to challenge their success and by the looks of it, it succeeded. Top Gun: Maverick pulled off another miracle and beat Avengers: Infinity War on the Domestic Box Office. The sequel made another $1.55 Million this weekend, that might not look big but it was enough to snap Infinity War out of its 6th spot. Top Gun: Maverick’s domestic cume stands at $679 Million. It replaced Infinity War that had $678 Million. The top five on this list are films of major IPs including Marvel’s.
Black Panther ($700 million), Avatar ($760 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804 million), Avengers: Endgame ($859 million) and sitting at the golden throne- Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million). The sequel is set earn another $5.44 Million in weekend 12 given its trends. That would take its domestic cume to $683 Million. With this even if the film follows a normal rate of descent it would at least make $693 Million, making the previously assumed impossible, possible.
The film’s figures would take it extremely close to Black Panther’s $700 Million. While it will be extremely dethrone to Black Panther, it certainly looks possible at this stage. I mean every time we say the film can’t do something, it just proves us wrong. Additionally, by now the sequel should have come extremely close to Avengers: Age of Ultron’s $1.405 Billion if not already past it. This would make Top Gun: Maverick the second biggest ‘part two’ sequel ever behind Frozen II ($1.45 billion).
Even if the film’s Digital release date is close, the film has enough potential to make the distance between Age of Ultron and Black Panther. It is amazing to see a film with small IP making so much money just based on its quality. Except for Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, I don’t see any other film coming close to its Box Office success. Top Gun: Maverick remains the highest grossing film of the year and for me the best film of 2022, yet.
