Blonde Ana de Armas

Blonde is one of the year’s most anticipated movies, and now we have got our first looks, shots and official teaser, starring Ana de Armas (of No Time To Die and Knives Out fame) as a loosely fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroe. The Netflix film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ long novel of the same name, has been delayed for a long time due to concerns over its explicit content – with the movie reportedly being rated NC-17.

The first teaser trailer of the film, released on June 16, does not reveal much about the plot, but it does feature de Armas in some of Monroe’s most memorable classic looks, like the pink Gentlemen Prefer Blondes dress and her white billowing gown from The Seven Year Itch. Here’s everything we know so far about the movie.

Netflix’s Blonde: Release Date, Cast, Teaser, And Plot

After being stuck in the development phase for almost a decade, the film has been granted a Netflix release date of Friday, September 23, 2022. However, filming of the project began in August 2019. The film was slated to be released in 2021, and in April that year, director Andrew Dominik confirmed that it had been finished for some time, reported Collider. Yet, in July 2021, the film’s release date got pushed back to 2022. It was rumoured that this was due to Netflix’s concern with certain mature sequences, particularly displays of abuse.

Apart from de Armas, the movie also stars the Oscar-winning Adrien Brody as “The Playwright” (aka Arthur Miller) and Nine Perfect Strangers’ Bobby Canavale as “The Ex-Athlete” (aka Joe DiMaggio). Meanwhile, Monroe’s mother Gladys is played by Mare of Easttown’s Julianne Nicholson.

The official Netflix synopsis reads: “Based on the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, Blonde blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”

Mostly in black and white, a haunting track of Monroe’s hit Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend plays in the background of the teaser, which shows de Armas in front of a mirror while Toby Huss’ character applies make-up on her. Initially distressed, the promo concludes with a shot of her flinging her head back and replicating a signature Monroe pose. You can watch the official teaser below.
