Dune 2 Paul Sandworm Riding

Given the positive reviews and commercial success of Dune in 2021, it came as no surprise that production on the sequel, which will be based on the second half of the original book by Frank Herbert, would start right away. Deadline reports that production will shortly get underway as Dune: Part Two is scheduled to begin filming in Hungary later this month.

Pre-production for the upcoming Dune: Part Two movie will start as early as tomorrow in Altivole, Italy. The Carlo Scarpa-designed Brion Tomb will serve as the location for two days of filming.

Dune Part 2 Production Starts Later This Month

On July 21, primary production with the movie’s cast will begin in Budapest, Hungary. Composer Hans Zimmer will once again score the music for the film, while Denis Villeneuve will return as its director.

Several of the previous movie’s cast members, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, will return in Dune: Part Two. Alongside the returning cast, the sequel also features Léa Seydoux, who will play Lady Margot, and Christopher Walken as Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. Additionally, there have been rumours that Austin Butler, who most recently appeared in Elvis, was in talks to star as Feyd-Rautha with Florence Pugh (Black Widow) playing Princess Irulan Corrino.

Dune, released in October 2021 and currently streaming on HBO Max, was a commercial success, earning $401.8 million at the global box office. The movie went on to achieve a 90% audience rating and an 83% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film earned recognition for its immersive style, sense of scale, and commitment to the original material under Villeneuve’s direction. The movie received numerous accolades due to its critical acclaim, including six Academy Awards and five BAFTA awards.

In addition to the sequel, Dune: The Sisterhood, a television series focusing on Bene Gesserit, is in development. Viewers won’t have to wait long to return to the Arrakian deserts as the movie premieres next year.

Dune: Part Two is slated to premiere in theatres on November 17, 2023.
