May 18, 2024

No one here is alien to the fact that the Box Office throughout world has been quite cold for the last 2 years. Now, I’m not sure who to blame this on, it may be the worldwide pandemic or the abrupt surplus of OTT networks or audiences aversion to theatres. No, no I know the pandemic is to blame. It was the root cause of it all. However after the horrendous 2020 and the somewhat better 2021, 2022 really looks like a new year. At the start of this year, there was the possibility of a 3rd Wave and many countries did suffer through it but currently the pandemic seems to have dissolved. This had a direct impact on the box performance of films. People did dare to step out of their houses and enjoy the theatre experience rather than sitting dead in front of their TVs.

The year has already taken a solid start with the releases like The Batman, Uncharted and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It is now at the middle of the year where we’re truly seeing the old queue at the box office back. It is genuinely soothing for the eyes as many had questioned the existence of theatres during the pandemic and for a true cinema lover it was heartbreaking to read that. Without any further ado let’s take a look at which movie ruled the box office this week.

Minions: The Rise of Gru Box Office

Minions: The Rise of Gru is an addition to the Minions franchise. The film is prequel to the Despicable Me films and stars Steve Carell as Gru who’d previously voiced the older version of the character. The film enjoyed a decent critical reception with scoring 72% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.1 rating on IMDb the film was on the right track. Add to that the popularity and craze of the Minion movies. This film was always going to do well on the Box Office. The film released last week on 1st July 2022.

Even if the Box office predictions were in the favor of the film, it shocked everyone when the film opened at $202.2 Million. The film’s weekend Box Office collection internationally was around $87.2 Million. That lifts the offshore cume to $93.7 Million. Considering the moderate budget of $74 Million, the film looks like an absolute win and will only collect bigger number as its moves ahead with a good word of mouth. Jurassic World: Dominion Box Office

Jurassic World: Dominion is the third and hopefully final film in the Jurassic World Franchise. Or the sixth film in the Jurassic Park franchise. There’s really two way of looking at it. The film was in the works for a long time and was naturally delayed due to the pandemic. However, when it eventually did get a release date the critics weren’t kind to the film. Every critic pointed out that the film feels is the worst addition to the Jurassic World Franchise. Check out our review of Jurassic World: Dominion.

It currently is 30% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has an IMDb score on 5.9/10. Yep, that is mediocre. However, regardless of the dim reviews, the film thanks to its loyal fanbase performed admirably on the box office. It is continuing its run at the box office quite well considering competition. Although, Thor: Love & Thunder’s release is going to affect it significantly. This weekend, the film sprinted past $800 Million mark, making it only the 4th Hollywood title to achieve this feat since the pandemic.

The film’s worldwide collection stands a $824.5 Million making it the No. 3 film of the weekend. The offshore cume is about $492.7 Million, adding about $26.8 Million from 72 markets. Considering the huge budget of $185 Million, its definitely not a Box Office failure. Check out Jurassic World: Dominion review here.

Elvis Box Office

Based on the life of the American Music Legend Elvis Presley, the film is directed by Bazz Luhrmann who has previously directed films like The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge. It stars Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in prominent roles. While the film was in production there were a few concerns around the film. From its premiere the film has garnered great critical reception, with most reviews hailing Austin Butler’s performance.

The film scored 7.8 on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes deemed it 78% fresh. Check out our review of Elvis. With people already starting Oscar talks, the film’s box office numbers considering the competition around it is quite good. The film has slipped 28% from last week with a total collection of $15.7 Million in 57 International Markets. The film’s total collection stands at $113.5 Million. It crossed $100 Million mark on Sunday. Considering the budget of $85 Million, it seems to have covered its budget.

Its performance will be severely affected by Thor: Love & Thunder releasing this week but I think it will clutch another few millions. Check out Elvis Review here.

Top Gun: Maverick

The much awaited sequel to the 1986’s Top Gun was released this year on 27th May. Yes, May and yet it is featuring in this list. The film stars Tom Cruise and Miles Teller in prominent roles. The film is helmed by Joseph Kosinski. Since, its first reactions the sequel has been a talk of the town. The film had a lovely critical response. It scored 8.6 on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes deemed it 96% fresh. Check out our review of Top Gun: Maverick.

Since its release the sequel had made a habit of defying expectations. First with the quality its offered and now the Box Office numbers. The film cruised through the weeks of competition and still holds strong against strong opponents. The film achieved the feat of being the first film of 2022 to cross $1 Billion threshold. It beat Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to become the highest grossing film of 2022. Maverick too will face the heat of Thor: Love & Thunder but seeing how it has stood strong against other films you never know.

The sequel added another $37 Million to its huge kitty from 65 International markets. The film’s collection currently stands at $1.1 Billion with an overseas collection of $544.5 Million. The film faced a minor 11% drop from last week. The sequel’s box office numbers even beat the original’s inflated adjusted Box Office collections. Top Gun: Maverick has been the biggest wonder and surprise of 2022. For me its the best film of the year, yet. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely check it out.
