Director Chad Stahelski provides an update on the Highlander reboot. The franchise started with Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 feature film starring Christopher Lambert in the lead role. The film follows Connor MacLeod (Lambert), an immortal Scottish swordsman who must battle his eternal foes. After this film, other offshoots such as anime films, original novels, live-action TV films, flash animation series, and comic books, were created. In 2016, it was confirmed that Chad Stahelski would make a Highlander reboot with Henry Cavil joining the venture in 2021.

Stahelski Regarding Highlander Reboot

In a conversation with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski talked about the reboot. He reveals that the reboot is happening. The creative team brought together elements of earlier TV shows to make it more expansive. “I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline ‘there can only be one’, you can’t just kill everybody the first time. I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property,” said Stahelski.

There is no solid report about the direction Stahelski’s Highlander is going to follow. However, there have been suggestions that it will be a modern tragedy. It will be more grounded in reality. There is no news regarding the release date yet, especially since production doesn’t appear to begin anytime soon amidst the ongoing Hollywood strikes.

Stahelski previously stated he has taken his time because he doesn’t want to diminish the overall eminence of the tale. While the Highlander franchise has become quiescent in the last few years, there is hope that the reboot will be able to bring back the franchise’s fame.
