Thor: Love and Thunder is the new Marvel film releasing this year and the 2nd film as of yet. The MCU is no stranger to huge box office number. They have at least 2 films in the top 10 grossing films of all time. The third and fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was its most successful one. Although, now that Marvel’s big Infinity Saga has culminated and they’re heading towards new characters and stories. These characters are less familiar to the general audience as they’re mainly from the comic book mythology. It will take a while for the audiences to get to love them. Since Endgame and Far From Home, Marvel has not tasted the same sweet success like they previously did. It has been a tough time given the pandemic and new set of characters.
The new Marvel movies like Black Widow and Eternals have had underwhelming box office runs. Except Spider-Man: No Way Home Marvel is in desperate need to replicate its Box-Office magic. Their most recent film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a good box office run of $909 Million. While it is impressive but given the hype surrounding the film the collections have fallen short. Many had predicted that like No Way Home Multiverse of Madness will cross $1 Billion and become the 1st film of 2022 to do so and 2nd film after the pandemic to do so. So, with Thor: Love & Thunder reuniting the pair of Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi and given their earlier success, Marvel does bank Thor: Love & Thunder to hit it out of the park. So, how much Thor: Love & Thunder needs to make?
Thor: Love and Thunder Aims $900 Million Box Office?
Thor: Love & Thunder is made on a gigantic budget of $250 Million. Earlier Thor movies have had a decent box office record. The 1st Thor movie released in 2011 directed by Kenneth Branagh made about $449.3 Million. Its sequel in 2013, Thor: The Dark World directed by Alan Taylor preceded its predecessor by collecting $644.8 Million even though it was regarded as one of the worst MCU movies ever. The 3rd film in this trilogy in 2017, Thor: Ragnarok directed by Taika Waititi did wonders for the Thor Franchise. It had great reviews as well as grossed $854 Million.
For a film like Thor: Love & Thunder these figures don’t look daunting. The movie is anyways predicted to gross around $900 Million given its hype, beating all previous Thor movies in the process. Though these figures are with respect to the year in which the film were released. So Thor in 2011 grossed $449.3 Million which is about $558.3 Million in 2022. Thor: The Dark World in 2013 made $644.8 Million which is $764.8 Million in 2022 and finally Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 made $854 Million which converts to $964.2 Million in 2022. Now it does seem a bit daunting considering Thor: Love & Thunder needs to make more $965 Million just to beat all other Thor movies.
What do the Opening figures look like?
Thor: Love and Thunder has not garnered the best of reviews as of yet as Rotten Tomatoes deemed it 71% fresh which is great but nothing compared to Thor: Ragnarok that peaked at 93%. Although, it does beat Thor: The Dark World’s 66% but not 2011’s Thor 77%. Considering the competition it has to face this weekend, Thor: Love & Thunder is estimated to make $140-$160 Million in US and Canada. Add to that about $150 Million from the overseas markets. So, altogether Thor: Love & Thunder eyes an opening of $300 Million worldwide.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan. Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release on 7th July 2022.
