The famous Mattel toy who has had her fair share of animated films is now getting her own live action action movie. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and Little Women director Greta Gerwig is helming the project. This is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2023 and it is not because anyone’s dying to see a live action Barbie movie but it is the talent associated with it. The involvement of Greta Gerwig has certainly brought new life to the project. Although it is not just the director, the cast as well is absolutely stunning. Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Micheal Cera, Hari New, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Alexandra Shipp. Honestly, people would simply gather in the theatres to see all of them. To this magnificent cast there seems to be another addition.
Industry Star joins the Cast of Barbie
Marisa Abela is the newest member to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie family although her role is pretty unclear as Warner Bros. keeping the plot of the film under the lid. Like most of the cast members except Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie her role is unknown. The official first looks and set images that we’ve gotten hint at the the movie will not be set in the current era. Ynon Kreiz, Chairman and CEO of Mattel, expressed her excitement to fans when the movie was officially announced.
“Barbie is one of the most iconic franchises in the world and we are excited to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures and Margot Robbie to bring her to life on the big screen. We look forward to building on this collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures as we tell the stories of our beloved brands. Mattel Films is on a path to demonstrate the enormous potential of our brand portfolio, as we continue to execute on our strategy of transforming Mattel into an IP-driven, high performing toy company.”
Emma Mackay earlier this year revealed how this huge ensemble got to know each other and how does Greta Gerwig handle them. “Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]. I don’t play games usually, because I get so competitive and angry. But Scott and I were top of the game. It’s great to do comedy, because Emily was a sad, dark drama. Barbie is light and funny and silly and American and pink.”
Mackay continued, “She’s everything I could have dreamed of. She’s so invested and precise, and so childishly delighted by what she’s doing. Scorsese said, ‘Never lose the amateur in you.’ I see Greta behind her monitor laughing, and she’ll reference something very niche and it will make total sense in that moment.
