The Batman 2 - Is the Robert Pattison Movie Sequel Not Happening

The Batman is the one and only DC film that has released this year. Surprisingly the film was better than any Marvel content we have gotten so far. The film is not part of the DC Extended Universe, it is similar to Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and Todd Philips’ Joker Franchise where events are happening in its own microcosmic universe. The film was helmed by Matt Reeves who has previously directed films like Planet of the Apes, War on the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield and Let Me In. The Batman was one of the first films of the year to taste critical and box office success. The film was praised for its gritty tone, amazing visuals and deep characters. However, we all know the film wasn’t flawless. The obvious problems in the third act were undeniable.

Still considering everything and especially the powerful first 2 acts the film made its mark. The film currently has a score of 7.9/10 on IMDb and 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was made on a hefty budget of $185 Million and the film earned $770.8 Million worldwide. Given the predicament theatre releases were at the time when the film released, its performance is praiseworthy. The film was an all out success for Warner Bros. so it was natural for us to assume we’ll see Pattinson’s Batman once again very soon. However, according to a recent update that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The Batman 2 Not Greenlit Yet?

We’re all aware the recent controversies that has tormented Warner Bros. Discovery. Their decision to shelve an almost ready film (Batgirl), their decision not to shelve a film that stars a felon (The Flash, Ezra Miller) is putting them in the bad light. Warner Bros. Discovery had made it clear after the merger that Warner Bros. from now on will keep a much tighter hold on DC films. After cancelling Batgirl, Zaslav had mentioned that like Marvel and Disney, DC films too will have a 10 year plan.

Apparently, Batgirl was not fitting in the 10 year plan. This doesn’t mean a reboot as all the films that have been in development and making before the merger are still happening and the 10 year plan will commence keeping in mind all these films like Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, etc. Recently Joker 2 was greenlit by Warner Bros. Discovery, early development on that project had already started. However, Warner Bros. don’t seem keen on greenlighting The Batman sequel.

Variety reported, given the flux that DC has been recently, Warner Bros. Discovery are yet to officially greenlight the sequel. The film is certainly in development under director Matt Reeves but Warner Bros. are still pondering over the decision. Earlier it believed that a trilogy for Pattinson’s Batman was already on the way. This doesn’t imply that WB would never greenlight it and cancel the film entirely, well that could happen as well but the point is maybe the film isn’t greenlit yet but would be in the coming months.

However, this will only lead to more problem as the longer Warner Bros. Discovery take to greenlit the film, the more delayed the film will be. We were hoping that the sequel would release sometime in 2024 but that doesn’t seem likely now. Hoping that WB greenlights the sequel till the end of this year the film can come out in 2025. Also, the rumored John Farrell’s Penguin series that was a spin-off of The Batman is likely to bite the dust given Zaslav’s new strategy of consolidating movies and TV shows to emulate the MCU.

The Batman is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
