After winning his lengthy defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp now plays his first significant role in a movie in three years. After Madame de Pompadour, Jeanne du Barry was Louis XV’s final royal mistress at the Court of Versaille. Her life freely serves as an inspiration for the ambitious drama.

She is a young working-class woman born into poverty and yearning for culture and pleasure. She uses her brains and charm to ascend the social ladder one step at a time and ends up being Louis XV’s preferred travel companion. He regains his taste for life as a result of their relationship, although he is unaware of her reputation as a courtesan. As their affection for each other intensify, Jeanne relocates to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court, going against every decency and manner.

Apart from Johnny Depp, Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair are the additional cast members. Why Not by Grégoire Sorlat and Pascal Caucheteux is the lead producer, with IN2 and France Télévisions also contributing as producers. For French sales powerhouse Wild Bunch International, the period drama was a fascinating package at Cannes this May. Le Pacte is handling the distribution in France.

After Polisse, which won the Cannes 2011 Jury Prize; My King, for which Emmanuelle Bercot won Best Actress in Cannes in 2015; and the semi-autobiographical film DNA, which was honoured with the Cannes special 2020 label, Jeanne du Barry is Maïwenn’s sixth feature and most ambitious production to date. Together with Teddy Lussi-Modeste, Maïwenn co-wrote the screenplay in addition to directing and co-starring in it.
