Black Panther‘s (2018) sequel‘s trailer promises an emotional and handcrafted film. The film looks like a somber and cerebral affair along with being an action-heavy adventure with vivid colors. Needless, to say the film already looks way better than any Marvel content that we’ve gotten this year. I have full faith in Coogler to provide us with an emotional, heartbreaking, layered and an old school Marvel film. The film will cover the aftermath of T’Challa’s death. The film will see characters like Shuri, Queen Ramonda, Nakia, Okoye and M’Baku returning from the first film. However, along with returning characters there is another question that haunts the film. Who will be the next Black Panther.
While the trailers hinted at Shuri being the new Black Panther we were not sure because there were many rumors and and speculation that there are more than one Black Panthers in the film. However, all these questions that we have will only be answered when the film releases next week. Though, we may not know the plot points of the film but Ryan Coogler has told us about his inspiration in writing this film to give us the thematic gist of the film. Let’s see what the director has to say.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is Thematically Similar to Terminator 2?
In a recent interview with Collider, Ryan Coogler – director of Creed, Creed II and Black Panther talked about the films that inspired him or influenced his writing. In the interview he specifically mentioned one name, that being the 1991 sequel to Terminator – Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The film was directed by James Cameron and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. The plot of the film revolved around two terminators one is T-800 (Schwarzenegger) and the other is T-1000 (Ryan Patrick).
Both are looking John Connor but the only difference being the former wants to protect Connor while the latter wants to kill him. Coogler in his statement said, “Terminator 2 is a big inspiration for this movie. Big time. And you think about what T-1000 wants, and what Arnold Schwarzenegger’s robot wants. They both want John Connor, but T-1000 wants to kill him, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character wants to protect him. That’s the movie. And I look at it like that and also try to spend time with them. Not too much, you know what I’m saying? But enough that you understand where they’re coming from and that you believe them when they make threats.”
Let me know what do you think of this analogy? Do you think Shuri is the new Black Panther? Which one do you prefer? Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is slated to release on 11th November 2022.
