The Marvel Cinematic Universe was known to make films that were guaranteed to be delightful and brilliant. However, today as it is in Phase 4 I think Marvel’s most loyal fans will also agree that the studio has found itself in a bit of pickle. The last 6 movies of the MCU has failed to garner the same critical accolades it previously did. The TV shows too, except for Loki, are mediocre. Many are calling this Marvel’s flop phase. The Box Office performance of the films is dipping as well, Spider-Man: No Way Home being the only exception. Considering this, it looks like MCU has adopted a new strategy. Bringing in as many Hollywood A-listers as possible. Eternals bringing Angelina Jolie to the MCU, Blade being played by Mahershala Ali and Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac. Sometime back we got the news that Ryan Gosling is likely to be sucked into the MCU very soon. However, now it feels like they’re not just bringing in big actors but also big directors like Chloe Zhao for Eternals and Sam Raimi for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The next MCU project is the long awaited debut of the Fantastic Four. Marvel is trying to keep the Fantastic Four film’s details under the wraps. However, today we have some updates on who might direct this film. Reportedly its from the MCU space itself.
Matt Shakman Helming the Fantastic Four Reboot?
Until now there have been many candidates for directing the MCU version of Fantastic Four. This decision is extremely important as Marvel is aware after two crappy attempts at adapting the iconic Marvel family, fans are waiting for a good film. This is a chance for MCU to strike gold. Given the bar is so low, its a chance worth taking. The names that have been thrown until include Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy director John Watts, Hollywood Legend and arguably the best director alive- Steven Spielberg and John Krasinski himself.
Krasinski is rumored to star as Mr. Fantastic in the film and like his A Quiet Place Franchise, rumors suggested that he can act and direct the film. Krasinski briefly appeared in Multiverse of Madness as Mr. Fantastic from Earth 838, however, it is not confirmed that he’ll also be playing Mr. Fantastic in Earth 616. Watts was almost confirm to direct the film until he decided to step down as he needed to take a break from the superhero genre. However, now a new name is thrown in the mix.
Wanda Vision director Matt Shakman is rumored to helm the MCU reboot. Shakman along with Wanda Vision has directed episodes in Fargo, Game of Thrones, Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Succession. Shakman has certainly made quite an impression on Hollywood as he is also set to direct Star Trek 4 and Apple’s Godzilla and Titans. Reportedly, Feigi wants a reliable director so he doesn’t have check in on the project from time to time. Like how he let Sam Raimi take all the responsibility after he agreed to direct Multiverse of Madness. Taking someone from the MCU space itself makes sense to fulfill this purpose.
This is reboot is easily Marvel’s Open Directing Assignment. With Wanda Vision, Shakman has proved his directing prowess. While neither Shakman nor Feigi have confirmed this rumor but it might be confirmed very soon at Disney’s bi-yearly event: D23 Expo. The event is supposed to take place on 10th September and in the Marvel panel we’re supposed to get the unnamed projects of Phase 6. Along with that the cast and director of the Fantastic Four Reboot is also rumored to be announced. We’ll have to wait till then.
The Fantastic Four reboot is slated to release in theatres on 8th November 2024.
