During Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, Dune: Awakening was officially announced by Funcom. The new title is branded as an open-world survival MMO that will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S and lets players explore the world of Arrakis. Although Funcom has been developing an open-world computer game based on the Dune series for years, this is the first time that it has been publicly revealed.

Dune: Awakening – A Brand New Title In The Dune Universe

According to the official announcement, both the Dune film directed by Denis Villeneuve and the Frank Herbert novels serve as inspiration for Dune: Awakening. The cinematic trailer, which you can view above, demonstrates how closely the new video game adheres to the visual style of the movie.

As part of the announcement, Rui Casais, CEO of Funcom, said, “Funcom has been pushing boundaries in the MMO genre for 20 years. It’s where our roots are. We built on that with Conan Exiles, our first big success in the survival space. With Dune: Awakening, we’re bridging the survival and MMO genres to create something truly unique and ambitious within a universe we’re all so passionate about.”

Sam Rappaport, VP of Interactive Media at Legendary Entertainment, added, “Dune: Awakening truly promises to bring the world of Dune to life in an exciting new way. We are thrilled to be creating this with a partner like Funcom, who is so adept at capturing the rich detail and wonder of cinematic worlds for the gaming audience.”

As mentioned earlier, it has been announced that Dune: Awakening will be launched for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Although no particular release date has been specified, Funcom is actively organising a Beta.
