Since Marvel’s Phase 4 has begun there are many new superheroes that have been introduced and the same goes with supervillains. However, every time when there is speculation going on around something, the most common name I come across is always Mephisto. I think it all started with Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Trailer where due to the storyline and an off beat Doctor Strange, everyone was theorizes that this Doctor Strange isn’t Doctor Strange at all. He is in fact Mephisto, the annoying, cruel, dangerous Marvel villain. The character is a demon and rules a dimension which he calls Hell or Hades, although, this has nothing to do with Christian mythology. He is an archenemy of Silver Surfer and Ghost Rider but he has often caused problems for heroes like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom. That is why it made sense that he would appear in No Way Home but he didn’t.
Marvel has teased and referenced a character for quite a long time and every time there is even a shred of evidence that he exists in the MCU, the fans freak out. The clearest reference to him was in She-Hulk’s episode 4 where we meet Donny Blaze who weirdly looks like Ghost Rider and has a name rhyming with him. He sends a drunk girl – Madisynn to some other dimension where she describes a man and his surroundings exactly like the what I described above. This felt like a direct taunt at all the Marvel fans who see him everywhere, as it was a direct reference to him and yet they didn’t acknowledge his existence. Well, it looks like Marvel is planning acknowledge his existence quite soon as they’ve cast the actor who’ll play him.
Ironheart – Marvel’s Mephisto is Funny?
A new report from Deadline has potentially revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is not it, on top of it it looks like the acclaimed actor may be putting on the cape of the infamous Mephisto, reportedly as soon as next year’s Disney+ series Ironheart. We can assume that along with Ironheart, he’d go on to play the same character in other projects as well, such as the upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos, WandaVision spin-off. It is important to note that neither the actor’s representatives nor Marvel Studios have commented on or confirmed Sacha’s involvement with the project.
Considering all the hype in the beginning of Phase 4 for him, it was only inevitable for him to eventually enter the MCU fold. However, I understand if it feels odd for him to enter in Ironheart but trust me, it makes sense. Well, the Ironheart’s villain in the show is The Hood, a criminal who wields a magical red hood. In the comics, its powers originated from Dormammu; however for the MCU, Marvel could always switch directions and make them come from Mephisto instead.
Sacha Baron Cohen may seem like an odd choice for Mephisto as he has played Borat but this odd choice is secretly perfect for the MCU. I just hope, Marvel introduces Ghost Rider in the MCU as well. Maybe Ryan Gosling will play it, I don’t know.
MCU’s next film – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will release in theatres near you from 11th November 2022.
