The Boys Season 3 Review - Bloody Horrifying Yet Bloody Spectacular

Amazon Prime’s The Boys has achieved a new level of crazy with its latest season which debuted a few hours ago. The series is anything but normal and has tons of gore, weird sex, and certain outrightly bold and disgusting scenes. This season actually features many uncomfortable scenes which many viewers might not be okay with, and the first 10 minutes themselves are enough to make you yell “WTF did I just see?!” The Boys Season 3 Episode 1, 2, and 3, are out now and here’s our review and verdict for the series so far.

WARNING: The following article contains mild spoilers to the plot.

Rating – ★★★★1/2

The Boys Season 3 The Craziest Thing You Have Ever Seen

Right from the opening, The Boys Season 3 succeeded in being crazy, weird, and highly captivating. When last month Eric Kripke called season 3 opening the craziest thing any studio has ever done, he wasn’t lying. That sequence basically confirmed the fan theories about Ant-Man winning against any superhero or villain. Aside from being crazy, it was one of the most profane and graphic sequence on The Boys yet. And season 3 keeps on getting more gory and disturbing as it progresses. But that is something we expected from this series, although we didn’t expect it to be as crazy as it is.

In last season we saw a very weird sequence of Deep talking to his gills and girl trying to finger them. Well that is nothing compared to this season, as here we see Deep sexualizing an Octopus, and later on eating it alive on the orders of Homelander. So, we can call Deep the weird symbol of the show as most of the scenes involving him are really cringey and hard to watch with a straight face. Talking about Homelander, he has now completely fallen to the dark side and has become unhinged. He’s portrayed exceptionally by Anthony Starr and he makes up for a really terrifying antagonist who is like a ticking time bomb. After realizing that the audience actually loved his honest side, he is now a lose cannon and the footage of that plane crash no longer works as a leverage for our heroes.

Homelander openly threatened Starlight that if they release that video, he will burn everything and everyone down. Ever since the beginning of the show, he has mentally tortured Starlight and this time he decided to force himself upon her by announcing to the world they are a couple. That aside, he made Deep eat seafood as well as his Octopus friend, and he nearly killed A-Train over a minor argument. So, it’s safe to say that his insanity has put everyone and everything in danger and the stakes of the show have risen tremendously.

The Boys Reunite to Kill Homelander

The Boys Season 3 Trailer Is Here and It Is Bloody Diabolical

Our heroes, including Mother’s Milk and Hughie, have agreed that there is no high road or better way to stop Homelander and Vought. After Soldier Boy came into the picture, Mother Milk couldn’t resist his tick and decided to go back to Butcher. Similarly, on realizing that Victoria Neuman is actually the adopted daughter of Mr. Edgar and is responsible for all the head popping they experienced last season, Hughie too decided to go back. So, now The Boys are united once again and their mission is to find a weapon that can kill Homelander.

This is where Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy comes into the picture as we see him in a flashback sequence narrated by Mallory. The reveal that there is a weapon that killed Soldier Boy, and hence can kill Homelander, shakes Butcher and MM’s trust in Mallory. But at the same time they now have a lead and will go to Russia in Episode 4. Butcher, portrayed by Karl Urban, once again steals the show by being what he is, a person who is fighting for the good but loses his way many a times. But once his canary (moral center) aka Hughie approves of his way, he takes the V24 serum and begins his rampage.

Butcher successfully tests his new powers on a former member of PAYBACK, Gunpowder. He beats him to death using his enhanced durability and strength and then cuts his head into half using his laser beams. The irony of him being very much like Homelander, has never been more strikingly clear. Also, it seems like just like Homelander, he too is reaching his breaking point and agrees with Homelander’s idea of an all out war with the last man standing winning it. That aside, he was once again taunted by Mallory of being a sociopath just like his father, and it seems like dark things await Billy Butcher in the following episodes.

Can’t Wait for Soldier Boy in Action

Jensen Ackles The Boys Season 3

That said, there was pretty less screen-time for Queen Maeve and Black Noir in these 3 episodes, although both of them had one great moment each. We got to see Black Noir’s past and his involvement with Payback, as well as what led to his disfigured face. On the other hand Maeve supplied Butcher with V24 drug and wished him luck on his quest to find a weapon that can kill Homelander. Starlight is currently tolerating all BS from Homelander in the hope that they’ll find that weapon. But we all know from the trailer, that what The Boys will find instead is Soldier Boy alive and kicking. It would be really interesting to see what the overly hyped Jensen Ackles’ character holds in store for us, as well as The Boys.

Talking about technicalities, the show boasts excellent VFX, and a very tensed atmosphere. The gore as mentioned above was excessive but highly realistic and well executed. The show surely received a massive budget boost and provided us certain big screen like action sequences, including Billy Butcher vs Gunpowder, and Payback vs the Russians. The score was equally tensed and the cinematography was on point as well. The Boys season 3 is definitely not suitable for children due to excessive gore, mature subjects, sexual content, and graphic male nudity.

Final Verdict – The Boys Season 3 manages to bow past expectations so far, making itself one of the best things on TV right now.
