The Star Wars franchise is finding new life on Disney+ with an array of TV shows and miniseries one of which was Obi-Wan Kenobi. It starred Ewan McGregor as the titular character and Deborah Chow helmed the series. With an IMDb score of 7.1/10 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 82% I think it is safe to assume that the Disney+ series was a success. With so much positivity around, fans were stoked for a sequel season for the show, however, no concrete updates were given about it since season one’s finale that aired on May 27, 2022. Well, we have an update today but I’m not sure Star Wars fans are going to like it.
No More Obi-Wan Kenobi!
Before the premiere of the show, Ewan McGregor had expressed his desire to play the iconic character again if given a chance, the actor said, “I’d be totally up for doing more”. However, this has proved to be wishful thinking only. Obi-Wan Kenobi was originally imagined as a movie similar to Solo: A Star Wars Story, it would’ve been a part of a Star Wars movie trilogy.
However, after the success of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm decided to convert the idea into a series. Hayden Christensen was brought back as Vader, Obi-Wan got to meet a young Leia, and the Inquisitors were brought to live-action. The series threw it all out there. Because of a unimaginative approach at the inception of the series, it doesn’t make sense for the show to return for a second season.
There are simply no stakes strong enough for a second season. However, McGregor can always return as Obi-Wan in a different show or even a movie. Regardless, it would be titled something else making Obi-Wan Kenobi a limited series at the end. So, Star Wars fans need to get comfortable with the idea that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series might be just a one off thing.
All six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries is available for streaming on Disney+.
