The period comedy about Pirates, Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins and produced by filmmaker-actor Taika Waititi is renewed for season 2 by the streaming service HBO MAX. This is the first official renewal of a series by the streamer after WB merged with Discovery and spun-off into Warner Bros Discovery, led by David Zaslav as the new boss.

Apart from being the executive-producer of the series, Waititi also stars as the infamous historical pirate Blackbeard, with a fictional take on the character. The series, however, is loosely based on the life of the pirate Stede Bonnet, who is played by Rhys Darby as the lead.
The official description of the series is as follows.
“Captain Bonnet is an aristocrat who abandons his comfortable life and family to prove himself as a pirate during the Golden Age of piracy, despite having no aptitude for the role. Sailing aboard his ship the Revenge, Captain Bonnet and his dysfunctional crew struggle to survive against deadly threats from naval warships and other bloodthirsty pirates. During their misadventures the crew of the Revenge cross paths with notorious pirate captain Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, and his crew, including right-hand-man Izzy Hands. Bonnet and Teach subsequently develop an unlikely relationship.”
The comedy drama also had queer story lines interlaced within the story and handled well, which received critical acclaim. The first season consists of 10 episodes and its currently unknown how many episodes season 2 will have. Now that the show is renewed, further details are expected to be revealed soon. Along with Taika and Darby, the cast also includes Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen and Leslie Jones.
