Since Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 3 things have been quite simple and calm. It almost seems like silence before the storm, i.e., Episode 7. While not much has been happening since 3 episodes, the series is gearing up for the mid-season finale. We are pretty much at the same place in the cartel story since episode 3 but the Saul Goodman story and Kim Wexler story has seen a bit of development. Here’s a short review of Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 6 broken down into two segments i.e., the lawyer story and the cartel story.
Episode – Axe and Grind
Rating – ★★★★
Kim Wexler and Saul Goodman/Jimmy’s Plan Explained
While Kim started her journey towards the dark side ever since Season 5, she has truly broken bad in this episode. Until now she was following Saul’s lead but she’s now gripping the steering wheel. Not only did she aid Saul in his fraudulent photoshoot and setting up something in HHM’s lawn, but she also refused to cancel the plan at the end. Even Saul thinks that their plan has failed and that they should rebuild it, but it seems like Kim is quite stubborn about it and might have something even more sinister in her mind.
From what appears so far, there are three important things in their plan. First, we saw Saul creating a fake photoshoot about bribing the judge of Sandpiper Case while he withdrew $20,000 in cash to arise suspicion in the mind of Howard. Second, Saul got Francesca to steal the dial-in credentials for the big Sandpiper plaintiffs conference call. Lastly, there was a lot of coffee involved in this episode and we saw Saul testing out some sort of drug.
Now from what it appears, Howard knows about $20,000 that Saul withdrew in cash, thanks to his PI. Next, we know how Howard already knows Saul is upto something, which is making him more and more cynical by the day. So, it’s possible that Howard gets his hands on the fake photos shot by Saul, which will cause him to call out the judge during the meeting. That aside, Kim and Saul plan to slip something in his coffee which would make him spike up causing further trouble.
Owing to all this, Cliff will decide to settle the Sandpiper case and leave Howard’s career in jeopardy. It’s possible that Howard suffers the same fate as his partner and Saul’s brother Chuck McGill. From the looks of it, this is quite a sinister plan but the problem is that the real judge still has a moustache and has a cast on his left hand. This unfortunately isn’t something Saul planned while creating the fake photoshoot. But it seems like Kim won’t stop now and proceed with the plan anyways!
Lalo Salamanca Nears Gus’ Trail
Nothing much happened in the cartel story in this week’s episode except the charmingly dangerous presence of Lalo Salamanca. He successfully tracked down one of the German workers in Gus’ new factory. Lalo is obsessed with finding out what Gus is building because that would bring out his betrayal and allow his to kill Gus with the permission on Don Bolsa.
Not only did he track down the worker, but also overpowered him in a graphic scene reminding us how dangerous this man is. Gus did not make an appearance in this episode but its clear that he is terrified of Lalo and wants to assure Mike’s safety as well. Mike on the other hand can’t see his daughter-in-law and granddaughter and is pretending to be away.
We can’t say for the cartel story, but Kim and Saul’s plans are going to be executed in the next episode which is going to an explosive one. Being the mid-season finale we expect nothing less from it and it was stated by creators that Episode 7 will end with a massive cliffhanger. This is exactly what happened in Breaking Bad’s final season too, as in the mid-season finale Hank came to know that Walt is indeed Heisenberg.
