Bird Box 2 Reviews Roundup - Another Unnecessary Spin-off

2018 was a surprising year for the horror – thriller genre as many new concept films came out which were simply outstanding. For example, The Quiet Place, which in my opinion, was one of the best movies of the year. Another film which became an absolute sensation at the end of 2018 was Bird Box. It was a Netflix original and the platform benefitted majorly from this release. Bird Box was quiet simple, an entity has taken over Earth which manipulates people once it looks in their eyes and then forces them to kill themselves. It was quiet similar to Quiet Place but just wasn’t as well executed as the former. Bird Box only received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 64%. However, the film did extraordinarily for Netflix as it drew over 45 million accounts taking it in in its first week alone. 5 years later, Netflix has decided to make another spin-0ff in the franchise, so, does the spin-off work any way or is it another mindless spin-off.

Bird Box 2 Reviews Roundup – Why?

Kate Erbland (IndieWire) – “‘Bird Box Barcelona’ has strayed so far from what made the first film interesting, scary, and yes, timely that it remains but a distant memory, as if someone pulled a blindfold over our collective cinematic memory.”

Matthew Shaffer (SlashFIlm) – “Cinema has always been as much commerce as content, but these transparent ploys for sequelization and world-building scan as transparent for even a casual viewer. Nothing takes flight here.”

Jeff Nelson (Guy at the Movies) – “‘Bird Box Barcelona’ lacks Bullock’s plucky central performance and much of the tension that came with it.”

David Rooney (The Hollywood Reporter) – “It is technically accomplished, well-acted, atmospherically unsettling, and certainly watchable.”

Ian Sandwell (Digital Spy) – “While it’s hard to imagine that ‘Bird Box Barcelona’ can repeat the viewing stats of the first movie, especially without an A-list movie star in the lead, it’s a better movie overall than ‘Bird Box.'”

Bird Box 2 has a rating of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, inches away from being getting a Rotten rating. BB 2: Barcelona will be available to stream on Netflix from 14th July 2023.
