Rebel Moon, an upcoming sci-fi space adventure directed by Zack Snyder, may end up being his longest film to date. The elaborate tale of Rebel Moon, which will center around the inhabitants of a colony in a distant galaxy facing out against an invading army under the command of Regent Balisarius (Ed Skrein), is Snyder’s second big Netflix project after his 2021 zombie movie Army of the Dead. Snyder and Netflix have lofty goals for the science fiction story, expecting that Rebel Moon would create an entire universe that can be expanded further.

Snyder is notorious for his love of longer runtimes, with Army of the Dead having a 148-minute runtime. However, the sources of inspiration Snyder is using for Rebel Moon, and the fact that it will be broken into two parts provide even more proof in that direction. Rebel Moon has a lot of leeways to have a very long runtime despite being separated into smaller individual pieces because it is a two-part tale. Even so, considering Snyder’s body of work, we speculate that Rebel Moon’s Dune-like two-part release might clock in at three hours each and six hours altogether, as Rebel Moon’s lengthy back-to-back shoot may indicate.
Additionally, Snyder’s mention of Akira Kurosawa and, in particular, his film Seven Samurai strongly suggests that Rebel Moon will have a longer running time. Snyder and Kurosawa are both known for having unusually extended running times, with films like Ran clocking in at 162 minutes and Seven Samurai at 207 minutes.
