Squid Game was one of the biggest things that happened to the world of cinema in 2021. It took the streaming industry by storm as it became Netflix’s most-streamed network with 111 million viewers. The dark drama series was in the top 10 on Netflix in all 94 countries with an existing rating system. Squid Game provided a new high to the K-Pop culture all over the world and fans have been rooting to see more from it ever since. Last week, with the release of the reality series Squid Game: The Challenge on 22nd November 2023, the hype for the series is back. In fact thanks to this, Squid Game Season 1 entered Netflix’ Top 10 once again. So, now there’s only one question on everyone’s mind – when is Squid Games returning?
Season 2 Filming and Release Timeframe
Netflix’s global hit Korean series Squid Game Season 2 was officially green lit by Netflix back in July 2022 with an official season 2 teaser announcement. This came as no surprise, as after the massive hit of season 1 of the series, Squid Game season 2 was expected for a long time by fans world wide. However, the catch is that the creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk who served as the writer and director for all episodes in season 1, revealed that Season 2 of the series is going to take time its sweet time. So fans already knew the show is not coming anytime before 2024.
In February 2023, Lee Jung-Jae revealed that Squid Game Season 2 was scheduled to begin filming in the summer and that it was expected to last about 10 months because “[it] will be bigger in scale”. Netflix further confirmed this in July by announcing that filming had commenced and was expected to last the 10-month duration. Fortunately, writers and actors strike in Hollywood had nothing to do with it, so the filming is undergoing undisturbed. Considering this pace, filming will likely conclude by May 2024 and we might see season 2 come out by December 2024 or early 2025.
Squid Game Season 2 Cast and Plot
The plot of Season 2 is currently unknown but the showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed Gi-Hun will return for season 2, “Gi-hun returns. The front man returns. The man in the suit ddakji might be back. You also will be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su”. Further, it has been confirmed that Gi-Hun will not just be back but also be back in the arena as a player. At the end of the previous season, after winning, Gi-Hun found out that a new edition of Squid Game was about to begin and he vowed to stop it and defied direct instructions from the Front Man.
“It’s probably safe to assume that, as we all saw at the end of season one, the main plot of season two will be revenge,” he added. “The key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season one was Lee Byung-hun, so it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story,” Lee Jung-jae said. Gi-Hun might join hands with the cop Hwang Jun-Ho who is probably alive and uncover the truth behind all this chaos. It would also be interesting to see the change in dynamics between the two brothers Jun ho and the Front Man, as they might be out to get each other in season 2.
As for the cast, most of the characters in season 1 met their end by the finale and now matter how much we loved those characters, they are gone now. Only way they might return could be via flashbacks but here are a few characters who will surely return and the various new cast members:
