The Sandman series on Netflix is based on Neil Gaiman’s DC comics that are set in the world where Sandman – Master of Dreams gives shape to our deepest fears and fantasies. However, once the Dream goes missing for a century, his absence sets off a chain of events that will change both the dreaming and the waking world. The Sandman is a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of 10 epic chapters following Dream’s many adventures. Gaiman is also the Executive Producer for the show, so he is deeply involved in the creative decisions taken in the adaptation. Amidst all the Netflix drama about the streaming giant is facing a big loss of subscribers, the platform has started making budget cuts. How? By cancelling shows right and left.
1899 was the most recent to face the axe. Seriously is it Netflix or Warner Bros. Discovery. Regardless, last week Gaiman assured fans that if there is Netflix, more Sandman is inevitable. Now, to reaffirm the same notion, an actor from the made a recent appearance at an event and confirmed there will be more Sandman and teased us when the the second season would start shooting.
The Sandman Season 2 Won’t Be Called Season 2
Actor Alexander Park who plays Desire in the Netflix show made an appearance at the Fan Expo San Francisco where the actor reassured fans that there is more Sandman coming but necessarily in the way we think. His statement is a curious one which needs to be pondered upon. Park said, “Netflix has not gone on record as calling it a Season 2, on purpose. And so, I will, from now on and in the future, and possibly until the end of the universe not refer to it as Season 2 until we know what it is.”
The actor then went on give us an estimated date of filming. According to him, the film should begin, “There is more Sandman coming in a really cool way and it can take many forms, so we’re starting shooting in the summer and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take. And I’m really excited to share the format of what that might be with everybody eventually.”
Park not calling it a season 2 and Gaiman too mentioning more of Sandman and not specifically a second season, points towards the possibility that a prequel or a spin-off series might be in the works instead of a second season. Like what Netflix did to The Witcher franchise, with The Witcher: The Blood Origin, expanding the show’s mythology via a prequel. Or maybe it is a movie, both seem like options Netflix could go for. Based on the filming date given by Park and considering heavy post production, the next thing from The Sandman universe would come out in sometime 2024.
The Sandman ranked eighth on the list of Most Popular Shows on Netflix of 2022. The Netflix show has an enormously talented cast including, Tom Sturridge leading the pack as Sandman alongside Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park and David Thewlis.
All eleven episodes of The Sandman are currently available for streaming on Netflix. Season Two doesn’t have a release date yet.
