After the depressing tenure of Zack Snyder at Warner Bros. the acclaimed filmmaker is moving on from that phase of his career and jumping back to something he genuinely loves doing – creating a grand saga of epic sci-fi storytelling. His new venture – Rebel Moon, is in collaboration with streaming giant Netflix. Snyder is not only directing the film but has also taken some writing responsibility as he is co-writing the screenplay of Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. The film is also based on Kurt’s original story. The film’s cast includes Djimon Hounsou, Sofia Boutella, Ray Fisher and Ed Skrein. The film has a more extended cast which we don’t have clear updates on. As the film is coming out at the end of this year, we have an update on the rating of the film.
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Isn’t Rated R!
Film Ratings revealed that Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has been listed under PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America. The reason for this mature rating is “Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material and partial nudity.” These mature ratings and themes were teased by the film’s audio mixer Andy Koyama. He told Slash Film, “We just did the first temp mix for the preview of part one, and it’s very exciting. It’s a big, huge, space — they probably don’t want me to say this — ‘Star Wars’-y, ‘rebels against the evil empire’ thing over all sorts of different worlds. It’s really fun. There’s going to be two films. I think we’re mixing that from June to February. And there’s also going to be extended R-rated versions of each of the two films, so we’re going to be mixing four different features.”
At Netflix’s TUDUM 2023 event, Snyder also teased a legitimate extended universe version, “The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way. The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career.”
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon will release in two parts. Part 1 – The Child of Fire will debut on Netflix on 22nd December 2023 and Part 2 – The Scargiver will release on April 19th 2024.
