Last month Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was released and CD Projekt is already eyeing the future of the franchise. Several months ago, a sequel to the game, codenamed Project Orion was announced. Chief director officer of CD Projekt, Adam Badowski offered new details on how the sequel is progressing. As Project Orion is in the concept stage, it won’t be releasing for quite some time.

“This project is on a conceptual design level right now, and it’s going to be designed by a team of veterans who were responsible for fine-tuning Cyberpunk 2077 and designing Phantom Liberty,” said Badowski. “We’re going to work out of North America, Vancouver, and Boston locations, team leadership is already there. And late in 2024, we’re going to work with teams comprising several dozen people, while as a target, half of the developers are going to work out of the northern US and the other half out of Poland.”

Lessons from CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077

It will be fascinating to see the sequel and the lessons CD Projekt Red learned from Cyberpunk 2077. After years of hype, the original game dropped in 2020. While it seemed promising in the beginning, the game launched in a broken state. The game’s console releases were a mess, especially the versions on Xbox One and PS4. Things got so bad that the company got into legal trouble. The game was pulled from the PlayStation Store for a few months.

Currently, Cyberpunk 2077 is in a much better shape. The game has been updated and fixed several issues for three years. The Phantom Liberty DLC has been well-received worldwide. Despite the huge success of DLC, CD Projekt will not be making any further expansions. The publisher has decided to begin using Unreal Engine for future games, including Project Orion, and move away from the current Red Engine. No further expansion of the current might be disappointing for some fans. However, others might prefer a new game.
