Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the newest D&D adaptation and the above image is the official poster of the film. Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop game that includes roleplaying. The game was created by Gary Gygax and was released in 1974. However since the original release various iterations of the game have come out. The game is very successful and famous till this day. It is in the classic tier of games. Given the popularity of the game and the subject matter it has i.e., a diverse selection of dangerous creatures/monsters, magic and heavy lore, the game was adapted into a film in 2000. Least to say the film wasn’t great but it did get two sequels, one was a made for TV movie and the other was a direct-to-DVD film. The films came out in 2005 and 2012 respectively.

The game recently popped back into pop culture conversations after its heavy inclusion in Netflix’s retro fantasy- horror series Stranger Things. After the 2012 film it seemed as if the cinematic wing of the franchise had gone dry. The new project Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was stagnant in its production for quite a while now but the film has finally broken its shackles and will release next year. The film is directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The film is penned by Daley and Goldstein along with co-writer Michael Gilio. As this week kicks off Comic Con we’d gotten our very first look at the film but now we have more. The film’s first trailer is released!

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Trailer is Amazing!

The D&D adaptation was initially being developed under Warner Bros with D&D fan Joe Manganiello, he was seen as Deathstroke in the DCEU. However, the film later changed its home and now is being produced by Paramount Pictures. Seems like everyone is moving away from Warner Bros. if you know what I mean. The film’s principal photography was concluded in the summer of 2021 and was supposed to come out in July 2021. However, the pandemic caused multiple delays that pushed the film’s release date almost by two years.

The first trailer of the latest adaptation is surprisingly good. I was not hyped up for this film. Inclusion of Chris Pine made it difficult to ignore but now that I’ve seen the first trailer, this film looks like an absolute delight. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is looking like a goofier version of the Lord of the Rings. The has an overall fun vibe to it. The trailer featured number of fantasy creatures, characters and settings throughout the trailer. This was expected since the original material has all of it.

The film looks like a proper adaptation to the classic game and the many D&D fans would be happy to see this as it was long overdue. Along with the trailer, the film also dropped its official poster that features the famed logo front and center with the cast in a silhouette. Check out the trailer below.

The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, and Justice Smith. Game Night directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are handling the writing and directing for the film.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is slated to release on 3rd March 2023.
