The Super Mario Bros. movie was always going to be in the news. For the better or worse. When the news of another big screen adaptation of The Super Mario Bros. was announced, fans got PTSD of the nightmarish live action film that came out in 1993. That film was so horrific that Nintendo couldn’t muster the courage to greenlit another adaptation of the Mario game until this film. However, even after crossing this barrier the film was covered in controversy as Chris Pratt’s casting as Mario didn’t sit well with a lot of audience members and rightfully so. The fate of a lot of video game to movie adaptations depended on the success of this film and this animated reboot didn’t disappoint as right from its release the movie has been a box office sensation. Nowadays, the film is in news for the box office records that it is breaking.
The Super Mario Bros. Enters The $1 Billion Club!
The Super Mario Bros. movie is doing wonders at the box office. After opening on an outstanding note, the film’s momentum didn’t shake. So much so that now the film has entered into the $1 billion club. A feat achieved by only 4 films post the pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water and now The Super Mario Bros. It is good to see that such a light hearted, family entertainer is ruling the box office. It seems like the audience is finally getting back into the habit of going in theatres to enjoy films.
The good old times seem to be back. Super Mario Bros. is only the 52nd film to cross the $1 billion mark in cinema history. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film opened with $368 million which is the biggest ever for an animated movie, beating Frozen II’s previous mark of $358 million. Now the most profitable film based on a video game of all time, Super Mario Bros. has been topping the domestic box office consecutively for 4 weeks now, that too fending off big competitors like Nicolas Cage’s Renfield, Russell Crowe’s The Pope’s Exorcist and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Along with Chris Pratt playing the lead role, the supporting cast of the film includes Seth Rogen, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Fred Armisen and Charles Martinet.
