We’re only four months into 2024 but I think we already know the best film of the year, Denis Villeneuve’s directorial masterpiece – Dune 2. It will take a heck of movie to beat the Dune sequel and based on the films lined up this year, I don’t think so we’re going to get a better film than Dune: Part Two, it is filmmaking at its best. If you’ve watched Dune 2 in theatres but still want to watch it repeatedly then don’t worry, I’ve found out the real online release date of the sequel.
When Will Dune 2 Have It’s Digital Debut?
Earlier this week, When To Stream revealed that Dune 2 will be available digitally from April 2nd but the outlet soon released a statement accepting that their information was wrong and they currently don’t know when Dune 2 will start streaming online. Well, but don’t worry thanks to another reliable outlet when it comes to online release dates, we have exclusive information on Dune 2’s digital debut.
According to a new listing on dvdreleasedates, Dune 2 will be available for purchase or rent on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple iTunes and Amazon Prime Video from April 16th, 2024. This gives the sequel the an exclusive theatrical runtime of 46 days. Given that this a Warner Bros. production, a 46 days theatre to digital window is huge.
For reference, here are some recent Warner Bros. movies and their respective theater-to-digital windows:
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17th, 2023 – April 7th, 2023 (21 days)
- Evil Dead Rise: April 21st, 2023 – May 9th, 2023 (18 days)
- The Flash: June 16th, 2023 – July 18th, 2023 (33 days)
- Barbie: July 21st, 2023 – September 12th, 2023 (53 days) Exception – $1.44 billion
- Blue Beetle: August 18th, 2023 – September 26th, 2023 (39 days)
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: December 22nd, 2023 – January 23rd, 2023 (32 days)
Given Dune 2’s amazing critical reception and a $630 million box office haul, it makes sense why Warner Bros. has adapted a similar approach to Barbie in terms of how long it will be exclusively playing in theaters – 53 days. This release date is also in line with David Zaslav’s brief update on the Dune: Part 2 streaming release date.
At Warner Brothers Q4 earnings call, Zaslav said that Dune 2 is expected on Max in the Spring of 2024. It also comes as Dune 2 was listed for a May 14th, 2024 release on Blu-ray, which would be 74 days after its theatrical debut date if accurate.
Dune 2 adds even more faces into the fold, including Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Christopher Walken as Shaddam IV, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot and Anya Taylor Joy as Alia Atreides. Dune: Part One is available for streaming on HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video depending on the region where you live.
