Disney Removes Six Famous Shows From Disney Plus

Disney CFO Christine McCarthy confirmed last week that Disney+ would be dropping some content off their platform and would also produce less content going forward. Along with this, Disney Plus also plans to increase the subscription price. These changes are due to the recent catastrophical subscriber loss (4 million) that the platform suffered after losing rights of the Indian Premiere League to Jio Cinema. However, while Disney+ is House of Mouse’s main streaming platform, the company also has a stake of 67% in Hulu. Disney uses both the platforms to distribute and produce content. After a post-earnings call, the CFO confirmed that the reduction in producing content is to make sure that all content from Disney aligns with their current strategies. A new report reveals the first batch of shows that Disney+ is shrugging off of its shoulders. You’ll be surprised by some of the names on this list.

Disney Is Swinging Its Axe At Major TV Shows!

Deadline reported that Disney+ will be removing six TV shows from their streaming platform as a part of their cost cutting strategy. This is the first time that the platform will purge their original series. This surprising and brutal move is to avoid costs like residual fees for participants. The original titles about to be knocked out are as follows:

  1. The Mysterious Benedict Society: The first season of the show premiered on June 25, 2021 and a follow-up season debuted next year on 26th October 2022. The series based on the famous children’s books from Trenton Lee Stewart, Tony Hale’s Mr. Benedict was officially cancelled in January 2023 after two seasons.
  2. Big Shot: The comedy sports-drama starring John Stamos and Yvette Nicole Brown debuted on 16th April 2021 on Disney+ after which the show was renewed for a second season and it came out on October 12th 2022. However, Big Shot was ultimately cancelled in February 2023.
  3. Turner & Hooch: The series served as a continuation of the 1989 film with the same name. The series saw U.S. Marshall Scott Turner played by Josh Peck trying work with an unruly dog called Hooch after Turner has lost his father. However, the series didn’t work at all as Disney+ cancelled it just after season one.
  4. Willow: Another show that was a sequel to an old film. Willow was an official continuation of 1988’s Willow from Lucasfilm. The events of the show took place 20 years later where a band of misfit heroes came together to save their world from the villainous Gales. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled in March just after one season that debuted on 30th November 2022.
  5. Just Beyond: The series was based on Boom! Studios’ graphic Just Beyond novels by Goosebumps author R.L. Stine premiered on Disney+ on 13th October 2021. Seth Grahame-Green’s horror-comedy anthology series lasted only for a season before it was ultimately cancelled.
  6. The World According To Jeff Goldblum: This showed launched alongside the platform itself on 12th November 2019. After which it was even renewed for another season that debuted two years later on the same date. Hollywood icon- Jeff Goldblum tells the world from his perspective after being in front of the camera for nearly 50 years.

The following list of movies, documentaries, and specials will also be removed from Disney+ as part of this purge on Friday, May 26:

  • The One And Only Ivan

  • Be Our Chef
  • Magic Camp
  • Howard
