Barring Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, I think the only worth talking superhero movie after the pandemic is Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Apart from that, DC hasn’t done much. They just released a series of four box office disasters starting with Black Adam, but we don’t have to talk about that. Coincidently, The Batman movie doesn’t belong to the DCEU and exists in its own plain of existence. Take the hint DC, solo films are your forte. While I’m raving about the film let me make it clear, when I watched the film for the first time I didn’t think of it too highly. I was like, “this is good but I’ve seen better.” Maybe a 7/10. Definitely not close to Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.” However, the trash that I’ve witnessed in 2022 and 2023 coming from the superhero genre has made me grateful for this film’s existence. A lot of it is credit to Matt Reeves who has previously helmed films like modern Planet of the Apes series, Cloverfield and Let Me In.
In a world recovering from the pandemic, The Batman performed very well at the box office as it earned $770.8 Million worldwide. Highest grossing DC film since the billion dollar Joker spin-off. The Matt Reeves was an all out success for Warner Bros. so it was natural for us to assume that the studio will milk this universe as much as possible. We already know that The Batman: Part II is coming. However, Matt Reeves also plans to expand The Batman universe to a TV series. There is the Penguin series coming out sometime in 2025 and the Arkham series. We’ve received some news about the Penguin series here and there. However, the Matt Reeves’ Arkham series remains a mystery. So, here’s everything we know about the spin-off.
Everything We Know About Matt Reeves’ Arkham Series!
Back in 2022, it was told to us that following the overwhelming success of The Batman, its world world would have expanded with The Penguin, a new series following Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobbleplot. Along with that, it was also reported that an Arkham Asylum series was in the works at MAX. Reeves was set to be producer for the series. Based on the limited information released at the time, it was presumed that the show would be linked to The Batman, perhaps by following Barry Keoghan’s Joker and the other inmates of the asylum.
However, it appears that we’d misread the situation drastically. DC Co-CEO James Gunn, while fielding fan questions on the social media platform Threads, Gunn confirmed that Arkham Asylum will actually be a part of the new DCU with Superman: Legacy and Creature Commandos. This came as quite a bit of a surprise to many fans including me. Gunn wrote:
“Right now Matt is producing Arkham as a DCU series, so there’s just the two [The Batman Part II and The Penguin] for now. Yes [it’s set in the DCU]. We love Matt as a director and producer so he’ll be producing stories both within his The Batman universe and within the DCU.” The show was announced before the Gunn- Safran DCU even existed. So, this made every fan suspect that this was a recent development. though when asked about the perceived switch, Gunn curiously said, “It wasn’t changed.”
The Batman is available for streaming Amazon Prime Video. The Penguin spin-off series doesn’t have a release date at the time of writing but The Batman 2 will release in theatres near you on 3rd October 2025.
