Martin Scorsese, the ace Hollywood director who has a penchant for telling gangster stories on the big screen is at it again, the director having movies like The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, Goodfellas etc. under his belt has come up with another mob story told with the modern methods. His 26th feature film, ‘The Irishman’ based on the book I Hear You Paint Houses is set to premiere on Netflix on November 27 in India, where the legendary Robert De Niro plays Frank Sheeran, an Irish World War 2 veteran and mob hitman who has developed a talent for dispassionate killing and becomes ‘associated’ with Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), the notorious union boss with ties to The Mafia. In addition to De Niro and Al Pacino, the already impressive roster of the movie includes Joe Pesci who came out of his retirement only after Scorsese offered him the role nearly 50 times before he accepted, the sources claimed.

Written by Charles Brandt and having a runtime of three-and-a-half-hours, (something we have come to terms with Scorsese’s movies) and a production cost of $159m, this is Martin’s longest and most expensive feature to date. The unusual alliance of Scorsese and Netflix was seen with suspicious eyes, but going by the trailer, we could not have asked for anything more and it seems like the duo could not have been better matched. The scale looks massive and the riveting style of storytelling that Martin excels in is very evidently on display here in the trailer. Considerable post-production work has gone in to de-aging the old stalwarts De Niro, Pesci and Pacino so that we can see them in their thirties, forties and fifties.

Having already garnered critical acclaim over the world at various film festivals where it is being dubbed as Scorsese’s finest work of art in his illustrious career of 30 years, we surely have our expectations on the seventh cloud. The smell of gunpowder and the powerhouse acting of some old-workhorses is something that we are dying to see on the screen, and if this is the last time that the trio of Martin, De Niro and Pacino is gracing our screens with their fling, we have got only one thing to say, Shut up and take our money!
