Drumroll please, we have the first horror film of the year – Night Swim. Blumhouse revealed the first trailer for this film back in 2023 and it looked like an interesting concept that could work well. However, the second trailer showed us the complete picture. A film that was supposed to a nightmare was a cinematic nightmare. I suspected that unlike Blumhouse’s last January release – M3GAN, Night Swim will neither be a box office success or a good film. My suspicions were proven right when the film’s media embargo lifted just a day before its release, that is never good. Terrible reviews, the perfect fit for a January horror film. As the theatres are currently full with releases from last year, it looks tough for Night Swim to gain a spot at the table. Considering that, the studio has refused to play the waiting game and announced the film’s online release imminently.
When Can You Watch Night Swim Online?
Bryce McGuire’s Night Swim is made on a budget of $15 million and has opened in theatres for $12.5 million for its first weekend. Based on the terrible word of mouth, I don’t think the film can sustain these numbers. The best case scenario for the film is that it breaks even. We have to take into account that out of the $12.5 million, 50% will go to the exhibitors (theatre owners), meaning the film has only earned something above $6 million. By that calculation, Night Swim needs to earn at least $30 million to break even. Looks mighty tough.
However, you never know the film might work out well too. $12.5 million is a solid opening for a film that has such terrible reviews. A cheesy bad horror film might just be something that the audience needs at the start of the year. Although, the studio is refusing to play the waiting game and have already created a fail safe in the form of an early online release date. Dvdreleases.com reveals that Night Swim will be made available on digital and VOD platforms like Vudu, Amazon Prime Video and Apple iTunes from January 23rd, 2024.
The Bryce McGuire directorial will only have an exclusive theatrical window of 18 days. We have no update on the film’s physical media or streaming release. I’ll be the first one to inform you when an update comes along.
The film is directed by Bryce McGuire with a screenplay from McGuire and Rod Blackhurst. It is based on the 2014 short film of the same name by the same duo. The official synopsis of the film only mentions, a woman swimming in her pool at night terrorized by an evil spirit. Night Swim stars Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Nancy Lenehan, etc.
