Top Gun: Maverick Is Better Than Top Gun!
Considering the reviews, there’s no doubt that Top Gun: Maverick is a way better film than the original was. Nearly all critics pointed out that it brings back the nostalgia and Top Gun vibes, then takes it to a whole new level of awesome! Time UK said, “See it on the biggest screen possible. Then see it again.”, whereas IndieWire called it “The most satisfying summer action movie since Mission: Impossible – Fallout“. Similarly, New York Post hails it as “a worthy, often exemplary follow-up to the 1986 classic. It’s everything a summer movie should be.”
RogerEbert rated it 4/4 and called it, “A breathless, gravity and logic-defying sequel”. The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, pointed out that it “follows the original beat for beat, to a degree that’s almost comical. And yet, as formulaic as it is, there’s no denying that it delivers in terms of both nostalgia and reinvention.” So, it’s clear that Top Gun: Maverick is more than a worthy sequel and pushes the franchise to new heights. If you are still doubtful, Associated Press called it “A textbook example of how to make a sequel.”
Tom Cruise Shines In A Worthy Sequel
Half the reason Top Gun has a huge fan following is Tom Cruise and he has once again proven his mettle. Variety praised him saying, “Tom Cruise Takes to the Skies, Literally, in Barrier-Breaking Sequel” while Empire Magazine called him “a magnetic movie-star performance as comforting as an old leather jacket.” Rolling Stone pointed out his stardom by stating, “It’s a fresh-faced gloss on the original… powered, like the original, by a star who’ll simply never stop being a star.”
Guardian also praised him by hilariously saying that, “Now I want to see [Cruise] take on a sequel to Risky Business and do the underpants dance again.” Consequence stated that “this is very much a Tom Cruise Picture, and don’t you forget it.” Deadline went as far as to call it, “What May Be The Role Of His Career!” All this once again proves why Tom Cruise is still the biggest action star of Hollywood.
Barely Anything Negative
Since, it’s our moral duty to present both sides of a story, after loads of digging we could barely manage a few negative reviews for Top Gun: Maverick. Culture Mix criticized the non involvement of lead female military operatives by stating “Top Gun: Maverick is an uninspired, outdated retread of 1986’s Top Gun, but with more implausible scenarios and with no women in military leadership positions.” Forbes compared it to Rise of Skywalker and said “it becomes a ‘Rise Of Skywalker’-style nostalgic ode to itself.” Black Girl Nerds pointed out that it lacked substance by commenting, “Is it a fun Hollywood film? Absolutely. Does it have substance? Not really.”
But all in all, Top Gun: Maverick received glorifying reviews from critics all over the world. That aside, it features an approval rating of 97% of Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 81% of Metacritic. So, yes, Top Gun: Maverick becomes a must watch film for cinephiles and it is a film worth experiencing in theatres! Top Gun: Maverick is all set to release on 27th May, 2022 worldwide.
