Wonder Woman 1984 Review – Nothing At All Wonderful About This One!

In a world where every studio, especially Marvel and DC, is coming up with numerous storylines and excuses to make a superhero film, Wonder Woman 1984 is probably the lamest one yet. Not only is it incredibly corny and boring, it also succeeds in being cringe-worthy at various moments. What’s hard to believe is that it comes from the same director, same cast and almost the same crew as the exceptional Wonder Woman (2017).

I thoroughly enjoyed the last 3 outings of DCEU namely Aquaman (2018), Shazam (2019) and Birds of Prey (2020) and after so much anticipation, the one I expected to be the best turned out to be the worst. Patty Jenkins neither had a good storyline nor the visual elements, which viewers look for in a superhero movie. A very pre teeny and cliche premise went on for over 2.5 hours in this poorly written and badly directed film. For over 2 hours audience expect for something to actually happen but nothing does which results in a complete loss of interest during the climax.

The only things which get you through this horrible ride are the fine performances by the cast and a hope that something might turn this film around (which doesn’t happen, by the way). Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) has delivered a strong performance and so has Chris Pine reprising his role as Steve Trevor. Pedro Pascal (Maxwell Lord) and Kristen Wig (Cheetah) do a fine work too but unfortunately their characters had no depth to them resulting in a poor on screen representation. So, their performances really didn’t make a big difference due to poorly written dialogues and bad character interpretations.

There are almost no action scenes in the movie which was supposed to be the superhero/action flick of the season and it spends just too much time establishing… NOTHING! A storyline which even a 5 year old could understand and guess, is elongated until the very end and a bit of action which finally does take place in the final 30 minutes, is hugely underwhelming. Though Wonder Woman discovers an extra few powers or so, it didn’t seem like a big deal at that point. Also, I am so disappointed that Wonder Woman, with all her new found superpowers almost failed to stop, literally, a Black Widow level threat!

Ok, I give up on the storyline and the plot as no amount of ranting can refund me the money and time, I wasted on this film. Moving on to the few good things about the film, I’d say that the legend, Hans Zimmer once again did a terrific job scoring the film. With Dune and No Time To Die about to release, Hans Zimmer has given us an taste of what he can do here. The production design and costume team of WW84 also deserves appreciation for creating that flashy and cool 80’s vibe. The VFX and CGI of the film is also towards the better side but nothing good or great because of the limited scope for action. Barring this, there is nothing much to appreciate about it.

Apart from discovering a few superpowers, which she somehow forgets to use in Batman v Superman (2016) and Justice League (2017), WW84 neither adds to the story of Wonder Woman nor to the DCEU as a whole. It is it a very forgettable and disappointing mess of a film, which I would not recommend anyone to spend their money on. So, just wait for it to launch on some streaming app and then never watch it.
