DCEU’s last saving grace is its upcoming film – Black Adam. The film was supposed to revolutionize the DCEU. From the moment it was announced it was marketed as the Superhero film that the hour needs. Something that we had to see. The movie in my opinion had taken all the right calls, especially cast Dwayne Johnson as the titular character. Given the year that we’ve had where every superhero film has disappointed us except for The Batman, I was really looking forward to this film as I genuinely wanted to be enthralled by a superhero film, like I did when I was 16. I feel sad to say, Black Adam is not that film. It is not a revolution that the DCEU needs. Its quiet simply a film that is self aware and invests heavily in action sequences and doesn’t pay heed to its screenplay which is one of the weakest of the year.
The most disappointing part of the film was Dwayne Johnson himself as I’ve not seen a more one dimensional performance from him before. Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate was the absolute highlight of the film followed by Henry Cavill as Superman. Yes, Henry Cavill makes a proper cameo in the film in the post credit scene. That post credit scene is more than just a fan moment as it is very much a set-up for a sequel which apparently will get a sooner than you think.
Black Adam 2 Will Possibly be Black Adam vs Superman!
Black Adam 2 is not officially announced but the fans who have seen the film film have loved it regardless of its gaping flaws. The film is an extremely fun time at the theatres and the strong supporting characters like Doctor Fate and Hawkman make it an enjoyable theatrical experience. The critical reception of the film has been poor but that has never stopped DC films to cause havoc at the box office. The box office projections of the film have been positive and it is more than likely that the film would be financially successful.
The film is a heavy lifter as it is made on a budget of $200 Million so it would at least need $400 Million to be called a box office success. It is not a perfect movie but it definitely one of the best superhero films we’ve gotten this year second to only The Batman. All other superhero (Marvel) films were outright atrocious. Considering all this I think it is safe to say that a sequel is inevitable. Its not just my opinion, the producers of the film as well think so.
In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn, the producers behind Black Adam, addressed when fans might be able to expect a sequel to drop. Garica said, “It’s not going to take that long. I can promise you that… we aways hope the first domino’s the easy one… we’ll get cooking on it fast, that’s for sure.” Flynn added, “[the team will] have the script ready, pretty fast.”
Garcia concluded, “Our vision is, what we really want to establish is Superman exists in the same world as Black Adam… both those guys exist in the same universe and that’s important for us. It’s in the universe where our JSA is and so forth. But we really wanted the world to know that these guys are going to cross paths and how we do it, we’re still working on it. We don’t want to give that away. But I will say that it’s much bigger than what people think.”
Black Adam is helmed by Jungle Cruise’s Jaume Collett-Serra, and will star Dwayne the Rock Johnson in the lead role of Black Adam. The supporting cast includes Aldis Hodge (The Invisible Man, Underground) as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets, Euphoria) as Cyclone, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I Love Before, Charlie’s Angels) as Atom Smasher, and Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye, Mamma Mia!) as Doctor Fate, with Uli Latukefu, Marwan Kenzari, Mohammed Amer, James Cusati-Moyer, and Bodhi Sabongui have also been cast in currently unknown roles.
Black Adam is currently playing in theatres near you.
