The DCEU might be in the weirdest spot in Hollywood right now. Be it anything, from every side it seems like DC is going through their worst phase and they thought the 2017 Justice League crashing at the box office was bad. There is the recent Discovery and Warner Bros. merger that is leading to all kinds money cuts. The money cuts led to the cancellation of various previously greenlit projects, including Batgirl that was almost complete. There is the backlash coming from that cancellation and I think most importantly it was Ezra Miller’s various illegal actions that reflected badly on Warner Bros. After the Batgirl movie cancellation fans were asking why is Warner Bros. cancelling Batgirl but they’d let the reshoots for The Flash film to happen even if the film stars a known felon. However, the last few days it was looking like Warner Bros. was on the verge of shelving the film but today the tide has changed. The Flash’s lead star Ezra Miller has released a statement to clarify his past actions. This comes days after he was spotted at his mother’s farm where he smiled for a camera and sported a mustache.
Ezra Miller describes his past few days as “An Intense Experience”
A recent report had suggested that Warner Bros. was considering three ways to go about The Flash movie, one was to completely scrap it, second that the film would release but Miller won’t be part of its promotion and the last one was to ask Miller release a public apology and they take the film forward from there. From the looks of it, we can say that Warner Bros. has gone with the third one. The Flash actor released a statement to Variety today.
Miller described his past experiences as, “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
Ezra Miller illegal activities began in March 2022. It began with a number of arrests in Hawaii before allegations of grooming came up, which was followed by Miller seemingly going on the run as authorities couldn’t locate The Flash actor. In the last few weeks, things began to ramp up again as Miller was charged with felony burglary. Andres Muschietti, the one who helmed the IT films will be directing The Flash. The film is supposed have bigger implications to the DCEU than being just another solo film.
With this move I think it is clear that Warner Bros. is not planning to cancel the film. They’re certainly not planning to replace Ezra Miller with another actor as that’d be extremely expensive and we all know how much Warner Bros. loves saving money. The statement’s implications on the Flash film is something to be seen. However, for now we can consider that the film is certainly happening and will be released next summer. Whether Warner Bros. will continue to work with Ezra Miller is unknown. Will he continue to play Flash in the DCEU is also not known.
Muschietti (IT) will helm The Flash, and Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Batgirl) will pen the story. Additionally, it will feature the Bruce Wayne/Batman characters played by Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, as well as Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdu as Nora Allen, Ian Loh as a young Barry Allen, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso in unspecified roles.
The Flash is slated for a theatrical release on June 23, 2023.
