Pixar’s recent animation film Lightyear, has made $5.2M between Wednesday previews and Thursday night shows. The sci-fi origin story of Lightyear is released across 4,255 theaters and is projected to make between $70-$85M. The film’s total global gross is expected to be $135M. The film also received very positive reviews from critics at 80% Certified Fresh from Rotten Tomatoes. To compare, Pixar’s previous critically acclaimed animation films like Toy Story movies were in 90-100% range and Lightyear’s RT score is a slight disappointment.
Lightyear Premise and Other Details
LightYear tells the story of young astronaut Buzz Lightyear who after being marooned on a hostile planet with his commander and crew, tries to find a way back home while confronting a threat in the form of emperor Zurg. It is officially a spin-off of the Toy Story film series. Hollywood actor Chris Evans voiced the title character and other voice actors includes Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba as part of the cast.
Lightyear banned in Middle East
LightYear is the latest film from Disney to be banned in various middle East countries. Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates didn’t like to pass the film through censors due to same-sex kiss involving the female character Hawthorne (voiced by Aduba) and her partner. The scene was initially cut from the film before restoring it after an uproar from Pixar employees claiming that Disney has been censoring “overtly gay affection”. The controversy has been subsided later after further malice to the studio of mouse and it’s CEO Bob Chapek.
