Warner Bros. were developing a new DCEU film focusing on the DC character of Batgirl. The film stars Leslie Grace in the lead role and it is helmed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Christina Hodson who previously wrote Birds of Prey and is the writer for the upcoming Flash film has written the screenplay for the film. The film was in talks for a longtime and WB had greenlit the production of the film. However, now that the film has completed its principal photography and is well into post production we hear news that the film has been shelved by WB and Discovery. Earlier this month WB held an early screening for the film to see how people react to it. Reportedly that screening didn’t go so well as people found the film disappointing and not up to the mark of a superhero film.
The film was made on a budget of $90 Million. Given that $90 Million is nothing compared to the huge budgets superheroes films are made nowadays. However, I think the budget is enough to make a decent film. The film being cancelled because it up to the mark portrays the WB creative team in a pretty bad light. This cancellation proves that even if Marvel is struggling in its Phase 4 it is still well organized than DCEU. The mess that WB is desperately trying to clean is just got worst with this cancellation. After numerous cancellations it looks like Titans and Doom Patrol too are about bite the bullet.
Why are the Doom Patrol and Titans getting Canned?
At first we’re getting reports that suggested both the TV shows were safe and in a good place. They were reported to be in no danger. However, Variety has recently reported that, “said to be on the chopping block.” This is frustrating for fans as this means that most of the DC TV will soon perish. The Arrowverse will be soon over. The Flash is ending soon as it in its last season. Both these TV shows were running for a few years and had gathered good viewership but the new leadership at Warner Bros. after the merger with Discovery.
They want to chop up as many expenses as possible. There is no clarification given by Warner Bros. as to why they’re doing it. It is now seeming excessive as there are too many cancellations. Even the stuff that is working is being cancelled by Warner Bros. Hopefully this will be only as a false alarm and they won’t cancel these shows but they did cancel the Batgirl film even if it was almost complete. So, for now there seems to be no telling as to what might face the sword.
DCEU’s next theatrical release is Black Adam that comes out on October 21st 2022.
