Black Adam (review here) was the film that was supposed to revolutionize the DCEU. From the moment it was announced it was marketed as the Superhero film that the hour needs. Something that we had to see. The movie in my opinion had taken all the right calls, especially cast Dwayne Johnson as the titular character. Given the year that we’ve had where every superhero film has disappointed us except for The Batman, I was really looking forward to this film as I genuinely wanted to be enthralled by a superhero film, like I did when I was 16. I feel sad to say, Black Adam is not that film. It is not a revolution that the DCEU needs. Its quiet simply a film that is self aware and invests heavily in action sequences and doesn’t pay heed to its screenplay which is one of the weakest of the year.
The most disappointing part of the film was Dwayne Johnson himself as I’ve not seen a more one dimensional performance from him before. Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate was the absolute highlight of the film followed by Henry Cavill as Superman. Yes, Henry Cavill makes a proper cameo in the film in the post credit scene. However, what does that mean going forward?
Black Adam Post Credit Scene Black Adam vs Superman?
The post credit scene of the film was a simple extension of what took place in the film. Basically, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller sends the Justice Society to put Black Adam back to sleep as he has woken up after 5000 years. After fighting amongst the themselves for most of the film Black Adam realizes that he is a threat to this world and thus he strips himself of his powers. The Justice Society feels like they succeeded in saving the world only to realize the real threat was Sabbac as he rises from the dead and then Black Adam has to save the day.
The film ends with Black Adam beating Sabbac and the surviving Justice Society members seemingly understanding that he is not a threat. The post credit scenes takes back possibly little time after the events of the film as Amanda Waller sends a message to Black Adam that if he wishes not to be imprisoned then he should stay in Khandaq not move from there. Black Adam doesn’t believe anyone from Earth can harm him and that is where we see Henry Cavill’s superman and the scene ends with Superman wanting to talk to
The post credit scene is simple. It basically sets up what we wanted. There are two reasons for this to happen. To reintroduce Cavill’s Superman. The other is to set up an upcoming film which could either be a Man of Steel sequel or a fight movie between Black Adam and Shazam! We know there is a new Man of Steel movie in development, so the post credit scene scene could go either way. However, Hiram Garicia (producer) cleared up stating the real vision behind the post credit scene.
In a recent interview with Cinemablend he said, “It’s never been about a one-off or just about a fight,” he said. “No, it’s about so much more than that. We really want to craft a long form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefully, they’re going to clash at some point, but it’s not just about a ‘one fight’ situation. That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel a journey between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the same universe.”
According to some reports Aldis Hodge too had a pitched Warner Bros. a Superman vs Black Adam trilogy where the first two film would be dedicated to build the tension between these characters and the third film’s 80% would be where they fight as things would be unsolvable. Do we know in which direction Warner Bros. and DC would go? No, we don’t. Black Adam actor Dwayne Johnson too gave us his version of the fight, “I think Black Adam lands the first punch,” he said. “Now, I don’t know Black Adam lands the last punch, uh, because Superman, I grew up a DC boy. Superman… I love Superman. I loved Superman and I still do.”
Black Adam is helmed by Jungle Cruise’s Jaume Collett-Serra, and will star Dwayne the Rock Johnson in the lead role of Black Adam. The supporting cast includes Aldis Hodge (The Invisible Man, Underground) as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets, Euphoria) as Cyclone, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I Love Before, Charlie’s Angels) as Atom Smasher, and Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye, Mamma Mia!) as Doctor Fate, with Uli Latukefu, Marwan Kenzari, Mohammed Amer, James Cusati-Moyer, and Bodhi Sabongui have also been cast in currently unknown roles.
Black Adam will release in theatres near you on 21st October 2022.
