Man of Steel is 2013 film directed by Zack Snyder that stars Henry Cavill in the lead role of Superman or Kal-El. The film focuses on the last son of Krypton and he has found a new life on Earth. However, the survivors of Krypton see Earth as a replacement of Krypton. No one is powerful enough to defeat the Kryptonians except for Superman. He must make a choice between his past and his present. The had an amazing supporting cast like Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diana Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon and Laurence Fishburne. The film was not critically acclaimed however, the fans loved it and they loved Henry Cavill as Superman. The film was made on a budget of $225-$258 Million and it made $668 Million on the global box office. The film was under the banner of Warner Bros. and DC.
As the film was profitable, a sequel was in the works. The original plan when the movie was in development was to create a Superman trilogy like Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. However, in the mean time considering the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warner Bros. decided to change plans and start making a universe right away. So, they changed the Man of Steel sequel to a Batman vs Superman movie, where they could introduce various superheroes of this universe like Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. However, the plan backfired as Dawn of Justice didn’t work out that well critically but it was once again profitable. After that I think we’re all aware of Justice League crisis of 2017. How Snyder faced a personal tragedy and Whedon took over and ruined his vision, only for fans to erupt.
After years of campaigning, fans got to see Snyder’s version of the Justice League. However, between everything that was happening, Warner Bros. forgot the very first thing they’d set out to do- a Superman trilogy. Fans have been craving for a sequel for years but that have received nothing but disappointment. However, it looks there is hope after all.
Man of Steel 2 in Development?
Until just a few weeks ago we were getting updates such as Warner Bros. no longer willingly to continue the Snyderverse. We also heard that, while they’re interested in retaining some of the actors in these roles like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa as Aquaman; Henry Cavill as Superman wasn’t one of them. However, Dwayne Johnson while promoting Black Adam had constantly mentioned that he wishes to see a Black Adam vs Superman film but he was cheekily cryptic about who will Superman in the film.
Well, thanks to all the leaks from the Black Adam premiere, we know that there is indeed a cameo of Henry Cavill’s Superman in the film. It is not another headless cameo like in Shazam! and Peacemaker. This was the first time in a long time that there is a confirmation regarding Henry Cavill’s status as Superman. Cut to today, we have received a report from The Hollywood Reporter that according to sources, Warner Bros. is looking to make a Cavill Superman film i.e. Man of Steel 2. The project is produced by Charles Roven, DCEU’s major producer.
For now, the project is searching for writers. Director James Gunn is also in talks with Warner Bros. to do a mystery film where “DC is definitely in play,” according to an insider source. It is to be seen whether this new Superman movie would concentrate on Superman’s arc and the trilogy that was originally planned or would it pick up where Black Adam’s post credit scene left us. There are two possibilities either the post credit scene will act as a launchpad for a Man of Steel sequel or we might get a Black Adam vs Superman film.
Regardless, this is amazing news as Cavill in Superman as cape is just perfect. I am excited to see his version of Superman back in action. I don’t think Snyder, who directed the original Man of Steel will return in the director’s chair. Who Warner Bros. deem fit to fill in for Zack Snyder, would be interesting to watch. I would’ve liked if Snyder would’ve returned but that looks quite bleak and it’s actually nice to see him move on from the DCEU and concentrating on his own new franchises like Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon.
Man of Steel 2 isn’t officially announced yet. Man of Steel is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video or HBO Max.
