Disney Plus and Star War’s flagship show The Mandalorian is back with its highly anticipated season 3. Although the first episode kind of failed to replicate the magic of first two seasons, we are all pretty optimistic about what awaits us in the rest of the season. Thankfully Episode 2 was a solid return to form which took you back to the glory days of The Mandalorian. Episode 3 however, is once again a different story as I am pretty sure loads of fans will be disappointed by this one. Read on to catch our in-depth review of The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 3 below but beware that some MAJOR SPOILERS follow below! Review Marathon – Episode 1 / Episode 2.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 3 Takes A Detour From The Way!
Rating – ★★★1/2
Ok, some of you might be yelling THIS IS NOT THE WAY after watching The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 3. Agreed that it spends most of its time away from the main characters, but it had visuals, set designs and slow burn elements that made ANDOR so incredible. In fact, it felt more like an episode of Andor than The Mandalorian and had there not been the opening and final few moments, it could have easily been skippable. But if you enjoy a bit off-track yet incredible storytelling you might actually like this episode.
It completely focuses on the characters of Dr. Pershing and Officer G68. Let’s be honest, we all knew Officer G68 was shady and will indeed betray him in the end and that is exactly what happened. The episode did spend a lot of time trying to confuse the viewers about her intentions but given that we saw her interacting with Moff Gideon in previous episode, we all saw it coming. Her motivations and goals are a bit unclear at this point but from what it appears, she is basically a double agent placed by Gideon to not let Pershing help the New Republic. At the same time, she also won the trust of TNR and that might help her rise up in the ranks and ultimately damage TNR under Gideon’s orders.
As for Dr. Pershing, the poor man was trying to do what he felt, would have been good for the galaxy but unfortunately his path to redemption was cut short. Now getting to the main characters, the episode opened with an explosive movie level dogfight scene which was basically Star Wars x Top Gun. It was a highly impressive and breathtaking sequence which kept me on the edge of my seat. Mando’s new Star Fighter is just too OP at this point, although not as homely and iconic as the Razor Crest. Also, you gotta feel for Bo-Katan as her new home was destroyed in this episode as well, forcing her follow Din and confront the Mandalorian cult she clearly doesn’t like much.
The episode ended on a high, though, with Din and Bo being accepted into the cult having redeemed themselves at the mines. This also proved to the Armorer and the cult that Mandalore can be rebuilt by them and that is exactly what we’ll see in the following episode. But wait a minute, what about the Mythosaur?! Din didn’t see anything while being sucked down and Bo-Katan definitely saw it while rescuing him but chose to ignore it for the time being. This mythical creature will surely play a huge role in not just this season, but probably season 4 as well. Finally, this episode also featured a lot of references and hints to the prequel trilogy as well, which will surely make the prequel fans happy.
Final Verdict – The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 3 is neither one of the best, nor one of the worst episodes of the series, making it a strictly mediocre entry to the season. But it did have some high points which were its incredible quality of production, well designed action sequences, and a massive buildup for the future.
The first two seasons and the first 3 episodes of Season 3 of The Mandalorian are now streaming on Disney Plus. Season 3 episode 3 will air on 22th March at 12:00 AM PT.
