As we near the premiere of the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon on HBO, here’s one thing we are all excited about: dragons. Dragons will connect the new series to the old one even though it will be very different from Game of Thrones in many respects. House of the Dragon takes place hundreds of years before GoT, when dragons were much more common, and their impact on civilization was recognized as a natural part of existence.
Fans of the show and readers of George R.R Martin’s Fire and Blood have already speculated who are the most dreaded beasts in Westeros at this point in time, even though some of these dragons are unlikely to appear in the first season.
In Martin’s universe, dragons typically get bigger as they age. Who in the upcoming series is the most frightening and gigantic monster? Arranged from smallest to largest, this article will attempt to tell you the ten biggest dragons the show might feature.
10. Seasmoke
Seasmoke, a dragon known for outliving many riders, earned a spot on the list due to tales of courage in battle and prodigiously long life, spending his final years on Dragonstone. Seasmoke won’t probably appear on the show for a while, but when he does, he’ll be crucial to the future wars. The formidable creature will destroy villages, humans, and dragons equally.
9. Grey Ghost – House of the Dragon
Grey Ghost is one of only two dragons that has never been claimed; hence nothing is known about his fighting skills. They got their name from the locals of Dragonstone and now reside inside a smoking vent on the Dragonmont volcano. We can only be sure of his existence because his carcass was discovered towards the end of the war, slaughtered by Sunfyre. This allows us to conclude that Grey Ghost was not a more fearsome enemy than the other dragons we saw engaged in battle throughout the war.
8. Sunfyre
A giant, vicious gold dragon named Sunfyre is frequently hailed as the most stunning creature ever. Sunfyre was growing faster than most dragons and was on course to become one of the biggest and most terrifying dragons of all time before being crippled in battle along with his rider King Aegon II. He can no longer fly, has scars down his back and neck, and is missing his right eye. Even yet, Sunfyre has managed to survive for a long time. This illustrates the enormous size of Aegon’s bonded horse, who will have to live up to high expectations when House of the Dragon debuts in August.
7. Syrax – House of the Dragon
Rhaenyra Targaryen rides Syrax, a huge yellow she-dragon. Rhaenyra and her younger half-brother Aegon are the two primary contenders for the Iron Throne following the death of Rhaenyra’s father, King Viserys. She often avoids combat with her dragon because many people want to succeed her. The most noteworthy accomplishment of Syrax is her ability to lay numerous clutches of eggs, which may one day hatch and be given to other riders. After challenging births, Syrax’s strength diminished, and she was never really put to the test in combat. She has a respectable stature for her age, and just seeing her on a battlefield is enough to frighten both men and dragons.
6. Meleys
Meleys is a scarlet she-dragon known as the Red Queen because of her copper horns, scales, and claws. Once known to be the fastest dragon in the skies, Meleys is not to be underestimated, even though she may have grown weary with age. Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, a descendant of the noble King Jaeherys, rides the fierce she-dragon. Meleys, one of the first dragons to engage in battle during the Dance, demonstrates that she is bigger and stronger than many other dragons of the time and is probably one of the biggest.
5. Silverwing – House of the Dragon
Silverwing is a slim, silver she-dragon who is riderless for the majority of the Dance and lives in solitary on Dragonstone. She is one of the oldest dragons alive at the time of the series and one of only four to survive the entire war. She is less aggressive, favours seclusion, and has trouble getting along with new potential riders.
4. The Cannibal
as the name speaks for itself, The Cannibal is the oldest and largest of the wild dragons living on Dragonstone, with coal-black scales and threatening emerald eyes. The Cannibal’s actual age at the Dance of the Dragons is unclear, but it is known that it delighted in consuming other animals of its kind. He would hunt down juvenile dragons, dragon eggs, and occasionally even larger animals. No one ever tried to claim this dragon because of how feared he was.
3. Caraxes – House of the Dragon
Since Balerion the Dread, Caraxes, often known as “The Blood Wyrm,” may be the most terrifying dragon in Westeros. More battles were fought on Daemon Targaryen’s (Matt Smith) deadly mount than on any other dragon ever before or since. Caraxes, who we initially encounter being used for blood, fire, and destruction, is likely to be featured in more “action” scenes than any other dragon in the series. Enormous, terrifying, and red, Caraxes is not a dragon to be trifled with, just like his rider.
2. Vermithor
Vermithor is close to the top of the list if we go with the general belief that a dragon’s size increases with age. Vermithor is a bronze, nearly-one-hundred-year-old, imposing, and battle-tested warrior. The most adored King of Westeros, Jahaerys the Conciliator, considered him his trusted mount. Vermithor lacks a rider at the beginning of the series and doesn’t join the battle until much later. Vermithor is past his prime and may not be the most challenging opponent in battle, but his age, experience, and enormous size will make him entertaining to watch.
1. Vhagar – House of the Dragon
Vhagar is by far the oldest and largest dragon still alive and the last survivor from the time of Aegon’s conquest. Her roar is claimed to be able to rock Storm’s End to its very core, and that one can ride a horse straight down her gullet. Around 100 years before the series’ first episode, Visenya Targaryen rode Vhagar during Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. Vhagar is now tethered to Prince Aemond Targaryen. As a young child, Aemond earns the affection of this powerful animal, and throughout the ensuing battles, he rides the mount twice as big as the next largest dragon. Vhagar offers House of the Dragon the opportunity to display a dragon that is so enormous that it puts others like Drogon to shame.
If the series continues for multiple seasons, we’ll probably see a lot more dragons and get more knowledge to debate which one is the biggest and most terrifying. For now, we’ll see who stands out when House of the Dragon releases on August 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
