You know the type: no hobbies, no spine, and a personality as spicy as unseasoned tofu. Luckily, some anime actually give their protagonists a pulse. Here are 8 anime romance titles where the main characters are actually interesting people you might want to grab a coffee with.

Rom-Com Anime Deserve Better MCs
The era of the “human-shaped cardboard cutout” needs to end. We have spent far too long rewarding shows that give us protagonists with the depth of a sidewalk puddle. When a character’s only trait is “being nice” while accidentally falling into romantic situations, it insults the intelligence of the audience. A sweet loser is fine for a gag, but a lasting romance requires two actual people with hobbies, flaws, and goals that exist outside of their crush.
The anime community deserves leads who have to balance a checkbook, master a craft, or deal with a personality quirk that isn’t just “clumsiness.” We should celebrate the weirdos, the workaholics, and the ambitious dreamers. When we stop settling for blank slates, we get stories that actually stick with us.
