PS5 Pro Is It Being Developed or Not Explained

Sony is to the gaming industry what Disney is to the Cinema industry. Not only are Sony’s original games are some of the best games ever made, Sony’s PlayStation series also is the biggest in console market. Talking about consoles though, PlayStation 5 came loaded with incredible new features, an amazing DualSense controller, and some great games. It is indisputably the best selling console since it arrived and just last month Sony released a new slim model for PS5. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play were packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage. While this upgraded console is yet to hit global markets, we already have some interesting news about PS5 Pro!

Insider Claims PS5 Pro Will Be Annnounced This Month!

You may have heard in the past few months that, a new report from Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming says that Sony is doing a mid-generation PlayStation upgrade, the PS5 Pro, which is currently in development. The insider turned out to be completely reliable when he said Sony will release a PS5 with a detachable disc drive later this year to cut down on current PS5 costs. As for PS5 Pro, he said that it is actually a separate unit that may instead be out by late 2024. The latest tid-bit about PS5 Pro from Henderson is that we will receive some major leaks about the console this month aka December 2023.

Apparently, Sony will be holding a dev kit distribution to 3rd Party studios for them to test the limits of the console. If that’s the case, some of the people involved in testing are bound to leak some or the other information about the PS5 Pro console. We have also received some hype-worthy information which states that PS5 Pro is going to be the most powerful console ever made! Also, last month we heard reports that Sony is also targeting its next gen console aka PS6 for 2027 or later.

Insider Gaming’s report in March was dismissed as being inaccurate by many when it was first reported. However, now they are back with serious claims which say that “Insider Gaming can report with a 100% degree of certainty that the PlayStation 5 Pro is currently in development.” They mentioned that PlayStation 5 Pro could be canceled at any given time but as of now it is actively under development. They went on to report that, although they cannot reveal any more specifics at this time, the first dev kit prototypes will be going to 1st party developers within the next couple of months! Also, the 3rd party developers will receive them by the end of the year. As for the development cycle and release, they stated that it is under active development with a tentative release date set for Q4 2024.

PlayStation 5 Pro Price and Specifications

As for the believability of this info, the source has rarely ever been wrong and with such solid claims, they are putting their reputation at stake here. Also, taking a look at PS4 timeline, it came out in 2013 and PS4 Pro and Slim came out in 2016 itself. So, it won’t be far-fetched to believe these rumors of PS5 Pro coming out in 2024 as it has already been 2.5 years since PS5 arrived. However, if you think about it, the entire concept of a PS5 Pro seems unnecessary. As you may remember PS4 Pro came out because the tech of original PS4 was limiting the developers as well as gamers since it didn’t support 4K gaming. In case of PS5, that it not applicable as it is fully loaded!

What exactly they can do with a Pro model that would warrant anyone to do a mid Gen upgrade? It’s not like 8K is going to be widely used or even available soon and the PS5’s base specs are already more than enough to last the next 5 or so years. That is basically the remainder of this current gen of consoles and by 2028, we’ll see the arrival of PS6. So, technically PS5 Pro doesn’t make much sense. That said, current games are cutting corners to hit either 30fps with high quality RT or omitting that for 60fps (except Sony devs). So, this is one area where there is definitely a room for a boost in performance to hit 60fps with RT and 4k.

Talking about the expected price, at release in 2016, the PS4 Pro cost $399, this was the same price the base PS4 had launched for three years earlier. Of course, three years into the PS4’s lifecycle the console had already received a price cut, which hasn’t happened yet for the PS5. If the PS5 Pro follows this trend, it would launch for approximately US $499. However, it is possible that PS5 Pro is pitched at an even higher cost, maybe even $599 since there have been no price drops for PS5 so far and Pro will obviously cost more.
